Name: Euphydryas chalcedona
Western checkerspot butterfly
Family: Nymphalidae

A very variable specie, having many subspecies, depending on habitat. Its range is the western side of N America, from Alaska to NW Mexico. A very adaptable butterfly, having no problems in living from cold tundra climate and high mountains to hot Sonoran Desert flats. Larvae feed on Dipsacus plants, obtaining some toxins that make them poisonous to vertebrates. Adults feed on mud and nectar, but they keep the poison from the larval stage.
Very good fliers, having a flight area of about 100 m.
Lives about 10 days in nature.

Very nice shot Petru. Very good detail and excellent colors. I shot two different species of checkerspot B-flies this fall. I still have not specifically identified them yet :-{ Well done!

Very pretty Petru!
The colors really reach out and captivate me.
Beautiful macro!
It looks like something took a bite out of the tip of his right wing.
Such a short life for something so pretty.
Thanks for sharing,

Thank you very much Petru. A great post!

Hi there,

To "catch" butterflies is one of the most difficult things. Sometimes you have to "tune" the spot by putting some "bait" like orange juice or salty water on an attractive background.

Great contrast and sharpness.
