[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This loggerhead shrike was hunting from the mailbox along a quiet country road near Bigfoot, Texas.

These small birds are surprising little predators. They are sometimes called butcherbirds for their habit of capturing small prey items, such as lizards or grasshoppers, and impaling them on thorns or even barbed wire for storage.

Not only are they "butchers" but these brave little "tyrants of the telephone lines" will attack and prey on other birds almost as big as themselves.

Hi Chris,
I could have used a mailbox guardbird when I first moved to my current residence years ago. Two young neighbor kids favorite habit was scattering mail throughout the woods...:(
But, all worked out. Kids either grow up or move off...;-)
Your loggerhead shrike looks really good!
Nice and sharp with a great pose!
Good to see you post. Hope all is well, and may you have a great 2006!
Best Regards,
Dave

Hi Chris,
This is a great shot of one of my favourite birds. Nice sharp image that really captures the character of the shrike. It's nice to see it looking at home alongside people.
Best wishes
Peter

Wow. Chris. What a sharp shot of this loggerhead shrike. I think they are such striking birds to look at, with their black mask and all. Very well captured and TFS. : )

Great matching colours. DOF is spot on and the detail very good. Background seems a little noisy but still works very well.

TFS!!!

Hi Chris

Running late this morning, but enough time to see that this is an excellent post. Good POV, clarity and details. TFS.
