Fisherbird’s Friend - IV

- or "MY fishing flotilla !!!"

This time the fisher, or rather the fishing flotilla from the size of it, is a brown pelican, and just as a real flotilla he is followed by gulls.

Brown pelicans usually will dive from the air for fish, while white pelicans are too buoyant and usually meet in a larger group to herd their prey in shallow water, and scoop their lunch out.

This one was catching his lunch while floating, and was fishing alone, or at least he tried to.

Some gulls soon provided a social atmosphere. One especially got very friendly and provided me with some of my favourite (if technically flawed) shots that just max out on the cuteness factor.

Technical:
The whole sequence incl. the two "friends” to follow was taken from far away (even for the 500 mm "Bigma"), so all these are huge crops from larger pictures, with detail lost accordingly both due to crop and focussing problems that made sharpening and noise reduction necessary (autofocus won’t work well when the subject to focus on is some tiny speck in the distance). Light was not terribly good either so I needed ISO 800 for the action. Usually ISO 800 is fine, but not in addition to heavy cropping.

I tried my best to save them, and think I succeeded enough to get the story across. Enjoy!

Gabi, this is great. I love the 'big guy'. He is obviously very popular with the smaller crowd. Nicely composed and well seen. Thanks.

Hi Gabi,
The brown pelican is the state bird of my home state.
It was interesting reading the difference between the brown and the white.
Nice picture! Great DOF and POV!
Thanks,
Dave
