I took this Horned Owl early in the morning when I always saw him/her at the Ridgefield Wildlife Refuge where I started my trek through the acres of woods, meadows, and creeks that make up the refuge. the refuge that is located on the Pacific Flyway was set up for migrating Canada Geese, Whistling Swans, various ducks, Snow geese, Sandhill Cranes, Eagles, Hawks, and many songbirds.
At this refuge we have several Bald Eagle nests, beaver, nutria, Black Bear, an occassional Cougar, and many coyotes. I have seen Horned Owls, Barn Owls, and one winter I saw a Borreal Owl that flew in from the Far North.
On this refuge archeologists have found at least one major Native American village on the banks of the Lewis River that runs into the Columbia River. It is here that Lewis and Clark mentioned that they stayed overnight near an Indian village belonging to the Great Chinook Nation.
I took this image with my 500mm Pentax 4.5.

Hi Steven,
Let me be the first one to wellcome you at TN!
I'm glad that you decided so, for I've seen your work on TE and I've thaught that you got some really good TN stuff!
Great first post here. Well composed, sharp and clear.
One thing thoug: you probably oversharped a bit, being noticeable especially on tje BG>
I'll do a workshop for you and I'll post it soon.

Regards, Petru

Perfect harmony of colours, and great composition, not to mention an amusing (and amused) gaze from the owl :)
However as Petru pointed out, you may have oversharpened the image.
TFS,
Betty

Bienvenue sur TN Steven!
Un beau spécimen, les détails dans le plumage sont bons et l'éclairage est parfait.

Félicitation et merci pour cette belle prise nature.

Joseph.

Hi Steven

No time to give a proper critique. Sneaking this in from work. Just a big green smiley!

Welcome to TN. A great first post, although I have to agree with petsrudamsa about the over focusing. The detail is still good, and the dof is great also. Look forward to seeing some more posts from you.

Hi Steven,
It's a nice picture for a start.
You have some problem with the focus wiht this and I think it had to do with scanning, but it's a very nice picture.
Well composed, good POV and DOF.
Well done.

Welcome to TN.

Good capture of the horned owl, they are so magnificent when you see them in person. It appears a touch oversharpened but a great composition.
