[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Common Seal ( Phoca vitulina) is quite common in the North sea. They are protected, so it is forbidden to hunt them. The colour of these seals varied from just grey to darkbrown, mostly with dark spots on the skin.
In recent years the number of common seals is increasing again. Also the exist of reception centres is helping to keep the population healthy.
This picture was made in such a reception centre.
This seal was found very exhausted and seriously ill on one of the sandbanks in the Dutch "Waddenzee" (the area with the small islands in the north of the Netherlands).
The animal is recovering from a infectious disease and is almost ready to release in nature again.
I photographed him in the big bassin in the centre where he was swimming around actively. Several times he came with his head out of the water and was looking curious into the world which was absolutely not his world. Hope he's doing well now.

Hello Rud,
Very nice portrait of a very special species.
Good to see how the water can't leave the surface of his fur. The reflections are very nice. Very well seen and done. TFS Thomas
