|[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note|
|The Barnacle Goose (Branta leucopsis) is one of the migrating geese with it's breeding grounds being being on the edge of the Artic along the coasts of Greenland, Spitzbergen and Island in the Barent Sea off the coast of Siberia. Infact nobody saw this goose breed untill some one found a nest in Greenland in 1890. This lead to the belief in earlier days that they hatched from the Goose barnacle (Lepas anatifera) which is a Deep salt water crustacean, for more information see here.|
They nest colonialy in unusual places for a goose on steep cliff face and rock out crops which offers protection from foxes which are one of the main preditors of this species, ahich is why they also choose very low lying islands that are far enough off shore to have no four footed preditors, though the goslings are vunerable to Glaucus Gulls in the first days of life and is the reason why both parents do not leave their sides and defend them strongly.
In the winter of course they migrate to warmer climates those appearing in the UK come from Green land and Spitzbergen though they chose differing places to over-winter those from Greenland on Islay in the inner Hebrides and the others on the Solway firth. The Siberian ones overwinter in the Netherlands. In all 3 places they spend most of the day grazing on fields and salt flats on grasses and seeds.
Those seen else where like here are more likely to be ex-captive birds who have hooked up with other species like the Canda geese this one was with, for the company as it seems to be strickly a flock bird and needs company to thrive.
Not sure if it is male or female as both sex's look simular.
