After my gf and I had seen THIS Spermwhale in NZ we didn't expect to ever see such an amazing mammal again. Never say never again as only one year later we saw this Humpback Whale as a bonus on our Orca tour.

We went to see Killer Whales (Orca's) on this tour and we saw many, but as a bonus we saw this beautiful Humpback Whale.

Humpback Whales are (+/- 10 metres) smaller than Spermwhales (+/- 15 metres) but we thought this encounter was more spectacular than the first one. In NZ we were on a very large boat with 100+ people. In Canada we boarded a very small boat with only 12 people. We were very close to the water & the Whale and we saw it dive four times in a row. The captain of the boat would place the boat on the spot the Whale had just been before it dove down, so it was a little scary. ;) We were the only boat in sight.

Humpback Whale - Megaptera novaeangliae
General info from: http://www.dec.state.ny.us

The humpback is a chunky, heavy-bodied whale that weighs 30-40 tons (27-36 metric tons) and reaches about 30-60 feet (9-18 m) in length. It is dark gray to black above with white patterns underneath of various size. This species is distinguished from other large whales by a more robust body, fewer throat grooves, a dorsal fin that varies in size and shape, and very long white flippers (up to one-third the total body length). There are knob-like bumps on the head and snout, each holding one stiff hair. This whale is not actually humpbacked, but rather appears so when arching in preparation for a deep dive. Many people know humpbacks for their array of complex vocalizations or "songs" recorded during courtship. These songs can last from 3-40 minutes in duration. Another trademark of the humpback is its array of acrobatic antics including breaching, lobtailing, slapping the tail and waving the flippers in the air.

Hi Pieter,
A very classic whale tail shot that is awesome! Exposure looks spot on. Subtle color with very sharp detail. I got close to these guys in Hawaii, but did not have my zoom then, just a wide angle. I will be going back to attempt this classic shot. SUPERB!
Scott

Hi Pieter!

Never say never again - so I'm glad that you returned :-) Great return with great subject :-) I like simply and clear composition, blue colours and perfect moment. This must be great feeling to see such animal live!

Hoi Pieter!
Welkom terug. Of is het zoals je in het profiel aangegeven hebt maar voor een enkele keer? Ik ken geen details maar ik vindt dat je er gewoon bij hoort.
Goede walvisstaart. Lekker scherp en mooi van kleur. Goede informatieve note.
Keep going.
Thx en groet, Ruud

Hi Pieter,

Excellent capture and well done on the composition.

I do find the composition weak, I would have gone for the Bottom right third and opening the left top 2/3. Oposite end, in other words. The motion I feel is a diagonal from bottom right to top left.

Mike

Hello Pieter and Sandra,

It is great to see a post from you again.

I love the simple mastery of this shot, with its wonderful and implied motion, great water details, and for the memories that it invokes of my experiences...

Superb composition, exposure, and POV.

Well done and thank you!

Hi Pieter and Sandra, I have never seen these in NZ, but I have in Hervey Bay in Australia. To watch them is such an amazing experience, isn't it? My 35mm photos are not good enough to scan unfortunately because I did get some good views, imho!
I love your composition, it is a view most people look for, so well captured, tfs

A lovely image Pieter, the blue's are stunning (albeit a tiny bit noisy...).
You are incredibly lucky to have seen such a beast with your own eye's. I did see one last year, but this was at the Natural History Museum *lol*

Wonderful luck you had Pieter! I love the dripping water from the tail and how the color of the sea mimics the color of the sky. Great study in textures. Well seen, TFS!

Hi Pieter. This is a classic shot and I wish it were mine. Excellent capture of just the right moment. I love the water drops streaming off the tail. Great exposure, speed and composition. Very nicely done :)

Hi Pieter,
This is a shot I want to be in a position to take, just once in my lifetime. What an experience this must have been and with a max focal length of 135mm you must have been pretty close. Excellent shot, Nice sharp detail, smooth colours and noise-free, great work.
Regards,
Adrian

AHA! I've found another one of yours that I hadn't critiqued!
This is such a simple shot that I find it difficult to find an aspect to comment on. Composition is correct, I would say. If the tail were bottom right, you would either crop out the 'wash' or have to zoom right out and the tail would then be too small. Maybe that would work on a large print but not here. I think I would prefer more saturated colours but that's my own preference, there's nothing wrong with it the way it is.

Hoi Pieter,

Wow, ik ben jaloers :-)
Ben zelf ook met een Orcatoer meegeweest, maar helaas, geen orca's of walvissen gezien.
Maar jij was dus " at the right place, at the right time"!
Dat bewijst deze schitterende foto, goed scherp en mooie kleuren, super!
