The Red-sided Rainbow Skink (Carlia rufilatus) is a colourful small skink (44mm) that inhabits the tropical woodlands and riverine forests of north-western Northern Territory. A terrestrial species, it lives in areas with a dense leaf litter where it forages on a variety of insects. Like many Australian reptiles it has only been formerly described to science relatively recently, in this case 1974. Currently there are 24 species of Carlia described, with the majority living in the sparsely populated subtropical regions; characteristically, all have 4 fingers and 5 toes. Most rainbow skinks are sexually dichromatic, with the males acquiring bright colours during the breeding season. This species breeds in September and October, producing 2 eggs.
This is obviously a male in full breeding dress, with an almost iridescent orange-red mid lateral stripe, pale blue throat and coppery-greenish crown.

This individual was found actively chasing small beetles in woodland near Berry Springs, about 50km south of Darwin. Croppped from the original macro, and an 80% USM applied.

Exquisite position of the reptile the captured Chris.
That so delicate form to stop itself on the fingers is wonderful.
Very good POV, with pleasant frame.
Correct DOF and sharpness... perhaps the use of an elevated value of F more had
benefitted in the focus on the back part of the animal.

Excellent capture. Very good detail and nice compo.
Job well done

I like the colors of this reptile. Also the sharpness of the image. The look in his eye looks almost human.

Thanks for posting

Very good Chris.
Great composition , good details and DOF and nice colours.
Well done.

Hey Chris, I love these critters. This one is lovely with his red racing stripes on tip-toe. Your DOF is a bit shallow at F3.2, but the details are very sharp where it counts. Nice eye-contact too. I like this one a lot. TFS.

Chris, Beautiful skink with great colours. Pitty the leaf was a little in the way. You caught the alertness of the hunting animal well.
Greetings, Jan

Beautiful lizzard Chris. Colours are just great and the dof and the composition are spot on - well done. Great note too.
