"Those of us who have not a DSLR, do not have the oportunity to capture birds at a distance. We need to be close in order to get something descent, even if we have a 10x. So please understand what we have to go through to upload images for your viewing pleasure. It's not easy." Mike Hodgson (Fisher)

You said it better than I could Mike, so I hope you don't mind me borrowing your words...;-)

My camera only has a 3x optical zoom which requires the shooter to get extremely close to the bird for anything close to decent. I can go to 4x digital zoom, but anything I have ever shot with that has been considerable less than stellar.
I hope to resolve my small problem in the future for your viewing pleasure.
Until then, may you still find some enjoyment in what I am able to produce with this limited camera...

Thanks for looking,

ps There are things I like about my current camera, but if I were to purchase another small camera tomorrow there are 2 extra things mine doesn't have I would try to acquire: 1) 10x optical zoom minimum 2) A shutter release that allows a cable release attachment.

Critiques [Translate]

Hi Dave,
I think you have done an excellent job with the severe limitations of the camera you use for this type of nature photography. It is only adaquate even for landscape photography. I think you have done great to improve your technique to get this good of a shot. The best part is, I know the secret!!!!!

Hi Dave.
This is a nice shot. It is maybe just a bit to dark for my taste, but I like the moody atmosphere created.
I agree very much with Scott, lately my time has been limited and today I had a better look at the ones posted recently, improvements are obvious.
You are getting very nice and close pics with your slim camera.
You got very well the attention of this bird, with a nice composition and details. Well done!

Hi David!
Composition beautiful and colors. Perfect frames. Brawo! Well done and TFS ;-)
best regards

Hi David!

Beautiful bird! Sweet portrait! Excelent photo!

Very good shot Dave. I like it on all counts, just a bit UE. Try this. Open this photo for TN in your elements 4 program. Hit the "auto" levels button in the "quick fix" section (not standard edit), under lighting. You will see quite a difference. Well done.
Thank You!

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the reminder, and how true, I couldn't have said better myself, o, wait, I did. LOL

You did well with the p.s. Well done on the composition and capture.
Your exposure is under, but, it's easier to fix. Hmm, let's see now...

Bonjour Dave!

La pose de l'oiseau est superbe et les détails dans le plumage sont bons.

I'm glad to see you posting again, and I think I'm the fortunate one to award you the 1000 th pts smiley.
I'll write more detailed later.

Regards, Petru

Hi Dave, I can agree with Scott's comments, and I think you have improved a lot since you joined up. It is good to see you persevering so hard.

I started off with a small digital and I learnt such a lot with that camera here on TN. It was a good base for me to learn with, just like you are with your digital cam.

The only time I posted a photo of a bird was with one the cat brought home and I snapped it 2 feet away before it flew off!! And here you are posting good compositions of birds from afar.

Good job my friend, and TFS........

Hello Dave,
I took a quick look at your gallery. I don't know if you realize it but your pictures are quite recognizable because of the colours. And this one is a good example. I would say these shots have usually quite grey and dark colours and overall quite gloomy mood. That makes me wonder what time of day you usually take your pictures? I noticed you often use flash.
As for the lack of dSLR I know well how it is because my coolpix has some big limitations too, but I can't really agree that if you don't have dSLR you can't take decent pictures of birds.
Anyway, that's a thing for a longer discussion and I have feeling my critique is a bit too long already ;)

Your picture has nice POV and framing though I must admit the gloomy colours make it look quite sad. You managed to get some good details though.

Hi David!

Very cute bird and very good mood of this photo! Perfect pose, details, lovely eyes. Composition is very well done. It isn't too dark for me - grey mood is perfect for this shot.

Hi Dave,
Very good composition with excellent POV,
great catchlight in eye,
Thanks for sharing!

Hi dave,

Great shot with a 3x zoom camera. So what are you going to do, buy a new mountain bike or a new camera? Or, fixin' bikes and buy both? :-)

Nice portrait shot Dave, great sharpness and POV, well captured too. Thanks for sharing.

Hello Dave,

It is great to see you posting again, please keep honing those skills, as they will become invaluable when you upgrade that 3x optical of yours.

Now to the photo, great shot, a tad dark, however, well composed with wonderful details, fantastic eye contact and lovely BG.

Well done, and thank you for sharing!
