This was just a shot taken at the botanical gardens in Bloemfontein, Free State. It was just a super specimen rather than a top class photo, so thought I would just share it with those who don't have aloes

Hi Tim,
That is by far the biggest Aloe plant I have ever observed. How tall was this one? I guess I have never saw them so high with the trunk exposed so much. Interesting!

Is that some kind of cactus, Tim?
Agreed it's sampling of a plant, seemingly not well known, so more reason for laymen like me to know more about it.
