African Yellow-Billed Hornbill
Tockus flavirostris

While the African Yellow-Billed Hornbill is a fairly large bird (average 56 cm), it is one of the smallest in the hornbill family. The Hornbill gets its name from its beak - which is unusually large, generally curved, and often has ridges. The tail of the Hornbill is long and is made up of 10 feathers.

The Hornbill's flight is rather clumsy because of the bird's rounded wings. Hornbills have the ability to skillfully seize swarming termites in flight and pursue grasshoppers on the ground with clumsy leaps.

Hornbills are omnivorous. They feed on insects and plant matter.

Hornbill breeding behavior is quite unique. With the female inside, the male walls-up the entry to their nest. A small hole is left through which the male feeds his family, and the female and the young defecate. The wall of the nest hold is good protection against predators. Female Hornbills lay up to 5 eggs which hatch after a month of incubation.

This picture was taken at the Happy Hollow Zoo in San Jose.

Hi Manyee,

Interesting bird this hornbill. Have seen hundreds of them during my trips in Africa.
The sharpness is impressing and the yellow of the bill is nice.
TFS.

Zeno.

Hello Maynee.

This is an excellent picture (and dedication to TN-members). You have been very active (posts and critiques/comments) during your one year membership. You allways write good, informative notes to your posts (which not many do any more and this will due time transform this wonderfull site to a non interesting gallery).

This capture is very special due to the very good sharpness/dof showing a lot of details in the plumage and a well blurred background to set the bird off very nicely. The colours are stunning - I like the darkness in the picture. The handling of light very good and the composition is perfect.

All over a very pleasant picture to look at - I think it would be fantastic as XXL and framed on a wall.

Beautifull shot Manyee!

Focus and exposure couldn't be better. Shallow DOF is great to isolate your subject. And sideview of his head help to maintain sharp focus all over.

Excellent work and TFS.

Well who would have thought you could get a picture like that at the Happy Hollow Zoo? The only times I was there I was trying to to keep track of 30 kids and could not even tell you what animals they have there.
