This Australian dragonfly is known as a Banded Flutterer (Rhyothemis graphiptera). I found this one late in the afternoon at Lapstone west of Sydney and was lucky enough to have it land repeatedly on a tree fern frond that gave a nice blue-sky background.
This species flies with a slow fluttering wingbeats and long glides. It has a wingspand of 65mm and a body length of 33mm. It has a distribution over much of Australia with the Sydney area being about its southern limit.
thanks for looking.

Hi Chris,
pretty crisp and clear shot.
Very few elements, perfectly composed.
Thanks and regards,

This is a very striking image, Chris - feels just like standing under a hang glider ready for launch ;) Very dynamic composition, and how on earth did you get that DOF at F4? Interesting how this species is only perching with two pairs of legs - the forelegs are folded away. Thanks again - excellent shot.

impressive!!!!! This is the first time i saw the dragonfly from bottom as you brought it up. Great detail i must admit. TFS

Privet Chris.
Wings of very exotic colour. Beautifully the root is appeared through.
Has well received - forced landing or rest before distant flight.

Hi Cris.
Beautiful BG with great blue sky, colours and deails.Good POV
Well done

You posted this whilst I was on holiday, and I'm only just starting to really catch up on what I have missed and I definitley don't want to have missed this one...

He is beautiful and you have really caught him well. Sometimes compacts are surprisingly good at macros and this shows it well.

Well composed, good POV, BG, and shaprness of image, showing detail of the subject. The lighting is very good too! TFS,

Hi Chris,
I enjoy watching photos of dragonflies from around the world (they are my favorite subjects) and this one is a beauty with those painted wings! I love the PoV you chose, using the blue sky as a background and maintaning focus across the whole wing.
