Lathonia, Queen of Spain.

Issoria lathonia (Linnaeus, 1758)

Queen of Spain Fritillary
Kleiner Perlmutterfalter
Kleine paarlemoervlinder
Storfläckig Pärlemorfjäril
Le Petit Nacré
Piccola Madreperla

Wingspan: 40 – 50mm

Distribution: Canary Islands, Madeira, North Africa, Southern, Central and Eastern Europe, Southern Sweden and Finland, Turkey. Not native in the UK and Ireland, but sometimes found as a migrant. In Europe from the coast up to 2500 meters above sea level.

A typical inhabitant of dry, rocky or sandy, sunny spots. In the southern range of its distribution the species can be found from February to late autumn, in Central Europe from April to October in two to three generations, in one summertime generation in the higher Alpine regions. Usually hibernating as a chrysalis.

Caterpillars feed on Viola.

The pretty little butterfly seemed to enjoy the warm sunshine after some cool and rainy days, same as we did. It looked very freshly emerged, with its very delicate soft wings moving up slowly up and down for quite a while, repeatedly giving me the rather rare chance to capture both the underside and the upper side in one shot.

Location: a steep slope between vineyards, overlooking the towns of Krems and Stein, and the Danube. Wachau, Lower Austria.

The picture was taken during an Easter walk on a sunny but windy day of early spring that has come late to central Europe this year. Not having expected to see much to be photographed, only my little every day pocket camera was at hand.

Thank you for looking.
Have a very good day.

Hi Peter,
This photo is a lesson in focussing - very sharp and clear - prosit.
BTW - You never know when chance passes by you, that is why it always pays to have your equipment handy even though here you did a great job - spot on!

Hi Peter nice photo. Interesting POV, the butterflys hairs make it look similar to the ground. Good color and Sharpness.
Well seen, regards

Sharp, but way too much distracting elements in fore and background to make it really stand out.

Hello, Peter.
Once it arrives, Spring must advance very quickly in Austria - it will be another month before we see fritillaries on the wing. Nice, colourful and sharp shot of the butterfly in its environment - it looks like a winged tiger in a miniature jungle. No doubt that this one was alive ;)
Best wishes, Nigel.

Fascinating shot even with your ordinary camera, Peter.
Great composition, colours, DOF and sharp details.

Hello Peter,

Hi Peter,
I'm impressed about the sharp and very close-up you have got with your pocket camera. I don't know if this "Reina de España" is a common BF that a I see frecuently; if so, I never can never approach to it!
Very good photo, Peter.

Hallo Peter,
eine wirkliche Schönheit - und so behaart!
Ich bin stets fasziniert, wie unterschiedlich doch Flügelober-und -unterseite sein können.
Hier sieht man beides sehr schön.
