Rocky Mountain Elk and calf:
This photo was taken with my old Pentax SLR, in Yellowstone National Park. The river they are crossing is the Madison.

Elk calves are usually born in late May or early June. Over 1/3 will not survive their first year. In Yellowstone the elk calves have many predators which they must elude, including: grizzly bears, coyotes, black bears, golden eagles, mountain lions, and wolves.

Hi Ryan
This is the second time I've gone into your portfolio and it is the second time that I am totally astounded because of the colours (and especially the greens) in your photos. This one is no exception and you managed to capture this moment wonderfully.
It is a great composition and the POV is very good. The DOF is spot-on and the exposure is perfect.
This is top notch stuff and you deserve every smiley that comes your way. TFS.
PS. You should consider re-visiting your intro page and at the top right hand corner you will find the facilities to update your profile and equipment profile. Add your camera/equipment detail to have a more complete presence on the site. That way one can learn from your photos and might have better insights of what one deals with in the event should one try to give you any advice or assistance.

Beautiful shot, Ryan. What a great moment you have captured.
Sharp details and great composition. I love the water falling off the calf.
The little fella is obviously struggling to keep up.
I noticed something strange around the eye of the calf.
It looks like he has two eyes on that side of the face. ???
But then my eyes have gotten really bad.
TFS. : )

Great job, Ryan.
Yellowstone is a beautiful place.
Thanks for sharing!

hi ryan
jolies couleurs et bonne lumiere.
et belle capture pour se petit et sa mere.

Hi Ryan

A great shot that is well composed, with good clarity and sharpness. Detail is spot on. A big tick for this shot! :-)

Hi Ryan,
Beautiful photo and such good colors and sharpness for a analogue photo. For the rest, I totally agree with Loot and Manyee.
This is just super!!

Beautiful thematic shot, Ryan.
I love the rich green background too in this wonderful image.

great timing,
nice compo

Hi Ryan, I see this image was taken some years ago and was obviously a favourite of yours. I like the composition as it presents just enough of the environment to give the elk scene good context. Often with nature images we tend to over crop to give impact. The colours have come thoruhg well and the scan has not lost much of the sharpness. Well done, Rob / Nixpix

Hi Ryan
I agree with Loot's assessment of the quality of the greens in this shot - vibrant and well set off against the tan of the elk and blue of the water. I also don't see the noise that often crops up in scanned shots. POV and action in this shot are first rate. TFS.
