Offically a Drone-Fly (Eristalis tenax), they frequent the patch of sunlight outside my front door and if you sit still will come surprisingly close. This one came too close for me to focus on using my long lens and I had to lean back to get this picure.

Taken using manual focus and handheld, I have found the best option to concentrate on a certain distance from you and simply to follow them when they are in this distance. Easier written than done.

For those wanting the the history on these pictures see Staking out his patch of land.

Usual picture info - converted from RAW, resized, cropped and sharpened a touch. Apologies for the noise level - ISO400 needed to pull off this picture... taken in TV (set shutter speed) mode leaving camera to sort out F-stop...

Also...
I've been a bit busy for the last week so haven't had much time for TN... but my husband goes away from home again tomorrow and I'll have a few evenings when I can play out again... in the meantime I have posted this and will catch up on everything etc tomorrow.

Hi Emma
Great shot of this drone-fly in flight. Not the easiest of tasks to accomplish and you did excellently. The BG is amazing for this type of shot as you obviously do not have much time to consider or to set up for the BG while chasing after a flying insect with a camera in front of your eye.
The composition is very good and the DOF is fine.
Well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hi Emma,
Lovely shot, great camera craft to capture this I think. Nice detail and even with f/11 your close proximity has defocused the background perfectly. Excellent work!
Cheers,
Adrian

Excellent inflight shot,with great timing...lovely

Bravooooo Emma pour ce superbe cliché !!
Wowwww, le vol de la bêbête a été capturé excellemment.
Photo en tout point de vue magnifique où toutes ces couleurs reposantes viennent nous carasser tendrement l'oeil.
It's perfect ! Congratulations et Merci du partage !
Fred.

Hi Emma,
What you need to do to make a photo. Focus...lean back and snap. As Loot mentioned, I am amazed by the b/g. The color work perfectly with such a small insect.
TFS,
Niek

So what can we expect with hunny away from home ;-)

P.S Points tomorrow.

Hi Emma,
Great inflight..Sharp detail and good light.
These are even smaller than a bee, so the degree of difficulty is greater..
Nice work and TFS!

Hi Emma,
Great catch. You must have burnt through a few CF cards trying to catch this...well I would. NIce composition and the OFF BG works really well in isolating the subject.

Hola Emma. Felicidades.Saludos.

I have an almost identical photo posted here and I used the exact same technique as you - keep focussed in one area and the fly will eventually fly into focus. They tend to choose the same spot over and over again for some reason. I found this spot and kept focused on it and got a few shots. It's still quite difficult to get perfect focus, though.
I know how difficult it is, so well done.

I like this shot a lot. Composition is great and the Drone fly is sharp. I thing the Green background blur helps alianate the Drone fly as well giving it more attention. Its hard for me to get one of these guys sharp sitting still much less flying through the air. Very nice capture.

Bonita imagen Emma... una gran captura en vuelo con nitidez y contraste con un fondo suave y apropiado.
Tal vez la luz disponible no ayudó para resaltar los detalles del insecto, pero esto, no desmerece la calidad de la presentación.
Bien hecho.
Gracias por compartirla con nosotros.
Saludos... Ricardo

Nice image Emma... a great capture in flight with clarity and contrast with a soft and appropriate background.
Perhaps the available light didn't help to stand out the details of the insect, but this, non be unworthy of the quality of the presentation.
Well done.
Thank you for sharing with us.
Greetings... Ricardo
