Keeping with the "blue" theme I have posted this is a Little Blue Heron looking for it's breakfast at the alligator pond in the wildlife park. This Little Blue Heron is wild and not a captive.

The Little Blue Heron is an interesting and unique Heron in that the first year they are completely white and are often mistaken for a Snowy Egret. The only really good way to determine if it is a first year Little Blue is to check out the bill and lores. The Snowy will have yellow lores and yellowish and black bill and the Little Blue will have a blusih gray ending in black on the bill. The bill is also thicker with a slight downward curve. The second year and from then on the Little Blue will be the color you see in my photo and what has given it's name...blue. The are usually solitary and fishes in shallow water .

Hi Lesley
Another winner from you, I like the clean Bg, the appology for a tail and the decurved bill clearly visible. Nice note and pointers on ID, always welcome, thanks for posting.

The bird is excellent, but why is the rock purple? Aswe've learned to expect from your images here, a really sharp and well composed image.

Well captured Blue and so detailed. What more can I say.
Well done.

Mike

I particularly like the color composition, with a perfect background putting this marvelous blue heron really in front of the image. Light is very well displayed to enhance both feathers texture and head details. A very elegant image, Lesley.

Good one Lesley. Excellent detail and good notes. Good job

Beautifully sharp and clear capture of your little blue friend. Clean bg. I like how the sunlight seems to be filtering through the trees to illuminate the head.

Excellent shot. Its nice and sharp and clear.I did not know there was a Blue Heron so the color caught my eye rightaway. Thanks for the pic.and keep up the good work.

Very good shot, but the branch in front is a bit disturbing.
Very sharp shot, great details, beautifuls bird.
TFS.

Wonderful colour of this bird Lesley. We unfortunately don't have a large amount of colourful wild birds in New Zealand so it is always a pleasure to share what others have to offer. This one is a real treat. TFS

Lesley, Very well done! This ones pose gives me the impression your heron is surveying its territory, searching the water for its next prize! Great detail, color, comp. with an informative note. TFS

This is a great post, containing both an excellent image and interesting note. The sharpness and DOF is superb and I love the eye contact.

The following is not a nit, but something I try with most of my shots. Have you tried to flip the shot horizontally? There are no rules governing it and it is not someting I can explain.

Very well done and thanks for posting

Je ne savais pas qu'il existait un oiseau aussi bleu, Lesley. C'est un oiseau magnifique et cette photo est superbe.
Un travail impeccable: image et note.
Merci
