[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
It's time for these guys again. They crawl up the side of the house in some numbers, but I don't think they are sufficient to damage the Pin Oaks.
The name is somewhat misleading since forest tent caterpillars don't spin tents as do eastern tents, but rather spin silken mats on the trunks and large branches where they congregate to molt or rest from feeding. Larvae also deposit silk in strands along which they travel to and from feeding sites. I occasionally see them suspended in mid air from branches 40 feet above. Thus far they are something of a nuisance, but not much of a pest.
They are prolific, but are the target of many predators including Diptera, Hymenoptera, Hemiptera, Coleoptera, frogs, mice skunk and birds.
You can see the characteristic white keyhole spots on the back. This differs from the solid white line down the back of an eastern tent.

Hi Greg
Great capture, lovely colours, and amazing details.
Unfortunately, within a couple of minutes I'll be leaving for Pretoria (1400 km round trip for the weekend). So, I do not have time to do a proper critique and there will be no further TN activities this weekend, but well done and TFS.

esta oruga muy llamativa que capto con nitidez y plasticidad es un hermoso ejemplo de la foto macro, puede guardarlas con su planta anfitriona para seguir el desarrollo hasta mariposa adulta es una experiencia inetresante que yo hice.
