This is the other side of the Pohutukawa Tree that I posted 3 weeks ago - "Living Roots". The Pohutukawa Tree likes hanging out on beaches. It begins growing in crevices on seemingly completely bare rocks. Then, as it gets bigger, gnarly roots form out from trunks and branches. In fact, the roots are able to grow in air over surfaces as they search for pockets of soil and moisture. Roots that can grow in air are pretty impressive, as you can see in the photo.

The tree roots grow in the cliff, but as you can see here, the cliff has fallen away over the years and all that remains now are the barren roots just hanging on to the top of the cliff but still alive. The tree spreads out over the sand and at full tide the water covers the lower branches, now sunken into the sand. I have other photos to post to show more of this tree.

I had hoped that this tree would be in flower, but the buds have still to open.

Very nice shot, would have been perfect with a bit more colors.

Good one Janice. The sun is very bright here. It tends to rob a bit of colour from the scene.Try lowering light levels slightly, then increasing colour saturation. You'll get back some of the 'bleached out' colour.

Good folow up shot Janice shows the roots well, nice one.TFS

I have no nits Janice. Another good one from your collection. Good work

Janice, you have the talent to shoot plants and, landscapes and seascapes. These living roots are great too. I like the composition and the POV. Sharpness is great too.

Hi Janice,
I agree that the color is off alitttle due to over exposure, but steve is right on about how to bring it back some. I like the composition and story about these trees. I think you have a great subject here. Very Interesting!
