Broad Scarlet (Crocothemis erythraea)

Average Size +/- 43mm

Description:
Males are heavy bodied, red dragonflies with clear wings. The yellow
Wing spot is over 3mm long. The abdomen is particularly broad and
Has a maximum width of 3mm.Females are pinkish brown in colour
with a greenish stripe running along the thorax between the wings.
Juveniles are often a golden brown colour.

Habitat and Habits:
Occurs near reedy pools or marshes particularly around bulrushes
and sage. Often settles on the ground but is an alert species.

Distribution:
Common in most parts of Africa. It is also found in parts of
Europe and Asia where it overlaps with Crocothemis servillia erythrea
(probably a sub species). Originally described from Monrovia.

This is my second post of this dragonfly species. This shot was quite a challenge as I had to get very close to him without chasing him away. The weather was dark and overcast. In the end I got about 10 shots from 200mm with MF from which I could choose.
I hope you like the frontal view.

At this time I wish also to wish all you wonderful members and their families of TN a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
I will be away for few days and will post again next week after I hopefully get some more good shots for the TN community.
May God Bless and keep you all safe over the festive period.

Hi Willie, this is so clear. The wings are amazing. TFS.
God's blessings on you and your family too over Christmas, Janice

And a very Merry Christmas to you, too, Willie ;-))
Beautiful capture you have here, focus spot on, great colours and details on his face, good DOF with just the wingtips on the left (his right) slipping slightly outside range - not bad at just F-2.4.

You've choosen a very original POV, Willie, allowing a beautiful exposure of these wings. And it's really very well done at such a large aperture. Soft light is a good choice too. Attractive shot. Merry Christmas to you too. Best wishes for 2005!

A good photo indeed, bu the noise is a bit distracting the eye!(so i left a littel work shop)
Too bad that the POV is bad so we cant see all of the dragonfly!

WellDone!

Hey Willie
Excellent macro, very good sharpness, Point of view, composition and colours!
A nice shot, but the noise is very distracting, and the DOF is too sharp IMO.
But overall an excellent shot! thank you for sharing this wonderful photo.
Well done.

Oh yes! Willie.
Very crispy dragonfly. Great DOF, POF and composition.
A great work: picture and note.
Thanks

And seasons greatings to you too Willie,
a good capture the POV is a good one shows the underside well. the image has a funny soft look to it, it is almost as though it is being viewed through a granulated glass screen, no idea of the cause but for me it just takes the edge off the image.
note is very full and detailed TFS robert.

Nice and clear frontal capture of this beauty Willie. Wonderful colours and lot of details. Looks like a very small dragonfly from your note.

A merry Christmas to you and your family too.

Very exciting point of view for this one, Willie. It may be a bit oversharpened, but the composition, colors and dof all work wonderfully together!
