Black-chinned HummingbirdArchilochus alexandri

Easily confused in the field with the ruby-throated hummingbird. Males can be told apart when the light hits the throat at the correct angle to show the structural colours – bright red throat for the ruby-throated, violet band at the lower border of the black throat of the black-chinned.

Here is a very detailed analysis how best to tell them apart in the field:

More info can be found in an online field guide to the birds of North America:

Humming birds can be easily attracted with a bright-coloured feeder – if filled with the right stuff.
A special “healthy” hummingbird instant nectar (powder with proteins, sugar and vitamins) is available commercially. Unfortunately it seems it tastes very healthy too – I found the hummers took a sip once in a while, just to be polite, like.

A sweeter and simpler solution is sugar water (1:3 to 1:4). Dilution depends on how often hummers are wished to return – if it is more concentrated they will have their fill more quickly.

These shots were taken at a well-introduced feeding station at Lost Maples SP, which provided great photo-opportunities for in-flights. The “soft drink” was very popular with the crowds of the humming variety!

Right/female: ISO 3200, 1/640s, f/13, 452mm
Monopod for stabilisation
PP: Noise reduction (NeatImage), slightly sharpened (NeatImage, PS-USM)

Hi Gabi,
Both very nice shots, excellent details and exposure, DOF is good (especially so on the right at f/13). I like the two pictures together, the framing is superb with the two beaks perfectly in line. Interesting and useful note too, great post.

Each shot is well done. But the whole composition is greater than the sum of the parts. Nice work!

excellent composition and presentation, gabi! :-)
hummingbirds are so cute, too bad we do not have them here in germany (except in zoos).
superb captures of the 2 "helicopters", perfect
frozen action and a terrific combination of the 2 sexes.
very well done & take care, thor.

Hello Gabi,
Excellent presentation this..I like the male/female pair, facing each other - Great!
Excellent results at this ISO. In my shots of this species, I never went over 400..perhaps I'll venture into the 800 range this year, after seeing yours :)
Very well done.

Hi Gabi,
Excellent shots on Mr. and Mrs. Black-chinned! You have got to love Canon for having a sensor that will allow this high of ISO settings and have such clear low noise detail. The exposures look spot on. Beautiful colors, sharp detail, and perfect OOF backrounds that really make the birds look great. Superb composition and frame for these.

Excellent detail and exposure is fantastic in both images. This is an excellent way to disply the dimorphic differences of these cute hummers. Really nice job Gabi. :) :)

Hi Gabi, very nice presentation of the hummingbird. I still have difficulty with flying birds, so Im always impressed with shots like this. Very nice background, nice finishing touch. TFS Reina
