Red Fox
Renard roux
Vulpes vulpes

The red fox is found in Canada from coast to coast. Resembling a small, slender dog, it is a shy, nervous animal, and, for the most part, it tries to remain hidden from view. Unlike the dog, it is equipped with furred foot pads.
Foxes dig their three to nine metre long dens in sandy or gravely soil with two or three entrances. They are conscientious parents and remain together as family units until autumn when the pups disperse. Their winter diet consists mainly of small mammals such as mice, squirrels, and rabbits. In the summer months, insects, crayfish, and vegetable matter play a more important part in their feeding habits. They are preyed upon chiefly by coyotes and bobcats.

Photo taken at dawn using 100-400 IS handheld. At Ile Charron Island in the middle of the St-Lawrence River facing Montreal.
MERRY Christmas to all of you
Joyeux Noël à tous

forgot to giove you the big smile!

Lovely capture of this little chap striding through the snow. Were you in a hide to keep him this relaxed and oblivious of your presence? Dawn seems to have been a very good time for getting this capture; whites are in excellent condition and the details in the coat stand out well.

Very cool, just play a bit more with the white levels ...

Merry Christmas to you Rene. Superb capture - you were obvously prepared for this one. Great composition and DOF.

Stunning photo! I'm impressed that you captured this fox before he caught wind of you! I think the blue-hue to the snow just makes it look even more chilly. Nice composition.

Absolutely stunning photo of a beautiful and elusive animal.

Rene I can see this one becoming a Christmas card it is probably the best fox image posted to here, the colours and sharpnesss are superb and the note is very informative thank you for the post and the wishes for the season.

Encore une belle rencontre ! splendide photographie, la qualité de cette lentille est légendaire... et vous l'exploiter de belle façon, cadre parfait, netteté, couleur... magnifique !
Bonne année 2005 !

Well this is a cracker Rene. Excellent detail on the Fox and its captured in very natural surroundings. Exposure is well handled to. Super post.

Superb shot, especially for a hand-held shot. The composition is beautiful. POV and DOF are also very good. One of the best fox shots I've ever seen. The puffs of snow being disturbed around the feet adds to the shot. You have done very well here.

What a beautiful shot, captured the fox so well. Nice sharp clear photo! Well done. I like where you've placed the fox in your photo, and the blurred brush in the background compliments his colors well. Also a useful and informative note.

Rene, as usual, another excellent shot. What is amazing about nature is that it is beautiful everywhere, at any times, under any conditions.

The fox and the snow form a very beautiful contrast. Great composition, note and sharpness.

Que voulez-vous que je vous dise.....
Extraordinaire. Tellement belle cette photo.

This is a really lovely image as far as composition and subject go; however, in the difficult light, I can see a few improvements that could easily be made, such as perhaps over exposing for a stop or metering off a gray card. Perhaps even a slight change to the white balance adjustment. Fortunately, this excellent image has fine detail, and most of this can be done in a workshop, which I will post today for you.

Awesome winter picture.
thankyou for sharing it.

I can't believe I missed this photo when browsing through your pictures. Wow! What a shot. You really have some amazing shots, but this is one of my favs. The contrast of the red fur and the white snow is beautiful. Great DOF, composition and colors. This pictures will join the Wolf, straight into my favs. Thanks for sharing!

just one word.. Awsome! Nice lens..!

Rene, What an excellent piece of work! DOF that has blurred the BG well isolating your Red Fox in the frame. Great details, color & exposure & composed very well also..Superb!!

beautiful picture.

I really like this one. The contrasting colors and the way the fox looks away to the left. It is clearly one of my favorites at TN

Even with a bad lighting, you made here an excellent picture of this beautiful fox, good composition and sharpen is very good

I love the way you framed this shot, Rene. The details on the fox in the forefront are so sharp, yet the snowy background gives the picture a dreamy quality. You caught the fox in a wonderful pose. He seemed so alert and tentative. Wonderful photo!

And two more make 70pts *grin*. Well I couldn't resist this one even though I'm supposed to be away doing something else at the moment. Beautiful! If I could shoot images like this I wouldn't need to buy christmas cards. POV, composition, DOF, sharpness all excellent. The fox is even covering his own tracks to leave a perfect background behind him ;). Wonderful image Rene, thank you.

Superb!, very good colors and point of view. Also the background around the fox is good.

Excellent photo.

Fantastic photo. The colors are so vibrant against the white snow.

Beautiful this fox! The contrast betwen the red-brown of the fox and the withe of the snow is really interesting!
Thank you for sharing!
