I think this is a barred owl. Strix varia. It is a large owl. It goes by many other names, including eight hooter, rain owl, wood owl and striped owl, but is probably know best as the hoot owl.

Barred Owls hunt by waiting on a high perch at night, or flying through the woods and swooping down on prey. They may also hunt near dawn or dusk.

Update: Data from Fisher...the above is wrong...it is a portraiture of the GREAT GREY OWL.

The call is a whoo-whoo-whoo-whoo-ah.

Hi Annick,

Beautiful capture of the GREAT GREY OWL and well done on the composition and details.
The barred Owl has brown eyes one of the key identifications.

Hi Annick, I just love owls. They have such an interesting look about them. Your colours and detail are great. Janice

Hi Annick,

This photo is very subtile. Especially the eye is great. TFS.

very nice;-)

Lovely side capture.Sharpness and detail is spot on. Well done tfs.

Hello Annick!
Impossible to have them face you huh? Ilike how you caught it from the side. I like its face, even more impressive than the Grand Duc (don't know the english name). The details are very impressive here!!
Thanks a lot!
