Flambe d'eau.

Iris pseudacorus (Linnaeus, 1753)

Yellow iris, Yellow flag
Sumpf-Schwertlilie, Wasser-Schwertlilie
Iris jaune, Iris des marais, Flambe d'eau
Giaggiolo aquatico

Family: Iridaceae.

Iridaceae are perennial herbs from rhizomes, bulbs or corms comprising about 80 genera and 1,500 species. The name "iris" refers to the sprectre of rainbow colours many species show in their blossoms.

The Yellow Iris is distributed all over Europe and can be found in marshy areas near ponds and rivers in blossom from May to July. It grows to 1 meter in height, with conspicuous large blossoms measuring approximately 10cm in diameter. Leaves are about 3cm wide, about as long as the stem, and shaped like swords, a property that obviously led to their German name "Schwertlilie".

The plant is strictly protected.

Iris plants are poisonous for most animals such as horses, cattle, dogs, rodents. Intoxication affects the gastrointestinal organs and causes vomiting and heavy diarrhoea.

The picture was taken at the edge of a pond in the park of the castle of Schiltern, near the town of Langenlois, valley of the river Kamp, Lower Austria.

Thank you for looking.
Have a very good day.

Hi Peter,
the iris is beautiful flower and you have captured it well,
the ducks in the BG are a nice bonus.
Maybe the bright part of the reflection is a bit disturbing.
Lovely colours, good POV and dertails.
Well done.

Hi Peter!
For one second I thought that you were in Lodz's Botanic Garden - I know perfectly similiar place there :-) Amazing flowers, awesome details and composition. Water on BG is very good choice, we've got even ducks on your photo :-)

Hi Peter, not always easy to get the iris, then the ducks, as well as the reflections. But you managed it very well. Pretty iris, it stands well against the trees and sky showing in the water. Well done,

With the ducks in the top left corner, this photo looks like a montage. If this was mine, I would be tempted to clone them out, in order to keep the attention on the beautiful flower, which has nice saturated colours and good texture. The reflection in the water works well and brings a sense of movement as well as a somewhat mysterious feel to the scene. Well done, Peter.

Well done Peter to frame this Yellow Flag < the upper one > against that nice dark b/g

In my area we call the wild ones the Blue Flag ...
They show up in various heights. In the barrens along the Atlantic shore they barely stick up!

Note:The Blue Flag is also the provincial flower of Quebec, having replaced the Madonna lily which is not native to the province. See a sample here ;)

I like the yellows in this shot! This main iris looks like it is sticking out its tongue... "Ahhhhh"... Tfs, Jay

PS Only after posting my critique did I see the ducks... ;)
