Syrphus ribesii

Perhaps not the best in-flight shot of a Hoverfly I've got but its fun trying and quite a challenge too.
There is some motion blur in its leg for it was cleaning its eyes whilst in flight,If you look close you can see one leg brushing its eye.
At 1/200 the wings are still virtually invisible, they beat them at an incredible rate whilst hovering, sometimes almost perfectly still.

Photo cropped and sharpened USM 200%

Thanks for looking and have a great weekend

Hello Andy, well caught this Syrphus in-flight. Great details and colors that blend well, very nice BG too. I agree with you, at 1/200 we can'nt see the wings. Their fluttering is about 1000/sec!! Best degards, Didier.

Hi Andy,
it's a great inflight of a hoverfly. It's amazing you got it so sharp with 1/200 sec, I think you was quick enough and took it when it was hovering as they do for about 1-2 sec and you hand good help of the USM.
Well composed, good POV, nice colours and very good details.
Great work, my friend.

Very nice shot of this hoverfly ! Excellent sharpness and details, wonderful colors, and very beautiful composition, as the insect and the flower form an interesting diagonal. Your POV and BG are very nice too. It is a bit strange, cause we almost don't see the wings, looks like the hoverfly is just hanging in the air. :-) Well done !

Hi Andy,
great macro shot, nice composition and detail!

Hi Andy,
This is a very cool shot ;-) 10 points for difficulty alone. Great spot on exposure. Colors and detail look superb.

A great action shot indeed! The DOF and BG are excellent. Sharpness and detail of subject is excellent under difficult circumstances. TFS,

Hi Andy, a very nice catch you had here!
details are showing great. BG and colours are beautifull. well done!!

Wow, what a fantastic capture, Andy!
To get such sharp focus on a flying bee as well as on the white flowers it is about to land on looks like a miracle to me.
Wonderful image for which you deserve congratulations.

Hello Andy,
Excellent in flight macro.I liked solid body, motion blurr on wings, sharpness, details and composition a lot.

Hello Andy,
Great catch mf..It's quite good actually :)
Luv that leg-up, eye cleanin' pose.. Now that's something you don't see in a hoverfly inflight everyday!
The composition and POV are excellent. Nice and sharp, very good color & light. I always try these in bright sunlight (I assume you have here also). I don't know what ISO you used? My set-up is a bit different than yours (150mm + kenko 1.4x) but with these small insect inflights, I use ISO 400, and try to shoot at 1/400th (with support), and around F/8...
Aint it fun ;-}
Very well done.

Hi Andy,
fascinating capture of very lively and daynamic qualities. Perfectly focussed, well composed. Very interesting to see the position of legs, as you described. Looks good!
With thanks, and best regards,

Hi Andy

Very nice work. Good composition, nice light and POV. Good quality. Thanks.

We all knew those of us who have tried this, its not easy. Great composition and nice focus on the body Andy. Very well done.

Lovely. You have captured a brilliant shot with the hoverfly in flight.

Amazing in flight shot Andy! Great pov here! I like it very much that pov! bg is beautiful too! I took some in-flight shot of these hover flies. You know I use my flash generally and so i use F8 and 1/500 (these are my limits also). So the wings were visible! But the bg is dark generally cause of the flash in my flight shots! I thought that you could prefer lower f and got the fast shutter time! Maybe next time ;-) But this one is still beautiful and has got great soft colours! btw, if you didn't mention that I couldn't notice the leg which brushing its eyes, very interesting!
Thank you and best regards!

Hi Andy,
As far as in-flight shots go, I'm progressing from big slow birds to smaller faster birds, but insects? Forget it, I'm nowhere near this kind of shot yet! A great shot, and given the slow shutter speed, fantastic result. Great detail, perfect DOF, exposure and great colours. Great framing/composition, wonderful shot.

Excellent shot Andy!! The head section is unbelievably sharp! I haven't touched my macrolens since last summer, but pictures like this encourage me to try again. TFS!

No its a great shot Andy.

Composition and POV are stunning, really make this shot worth posting.

Very hard to do, so well done.

hi andy
un insecte en vol parfaitement net j'en reve la nuit,c'est excellent.

I do like it very much. Looks really natural and detailed.
The composition is beautiful. I like very much the colour in the eye. I have to practice too with the Canon and the 60mm. to get one in the air. It is almost Cristina´s property :)
Thanks Andy.
