[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I took this photo along with numerous others about 2 weeks ago, but only today did I realize that this little chap is actually a rare species which is on the "Red List 1997" for endangered species.
This is a Brandt's bat, Myotis brandti (Myotis meaning "mouse-eared"), a tiny bat with a body length of just 4 cm, length of wings about 22 cm and weight a mere 4-10 gram. According to the information I've found it's extremely difficult to distinguish this species from the Whiskered bat Myotis mystacinus, but as the latter is found only on the island of Bornholm, I reckon I can safely say this must be the Brandt variety ;-))
The little fellow is also the first bat ever that I've seen, and he's one lucky bat. I found him one morning almost right outside my front door when coming back after walking Milloup. He was lying on the tarpaulin covering my neighbour's trailer, and it looked as if he'd fallen from a tree. At first I thought he was dead or dying as he was totally immobile, so I raced up with Milloup and brought the camera back down.
When I touched him he moved a little, so I picked him up gently to look closer and get better photos. After a while sitting in my hand he seemed to be feeling better, he started moving around on my hand. I hadn't brought my macro lens, so I then took him home with me to get closer shots. But I also wanted my breakfast, so I placed him in my net curtains to sit comfortably while I ate. With the warmth indoors he seemed to become increasingly active, climbing up and down and finally jumping onto the floor and racing around there. Didn't seem able to fly, however. Maybe a youngster not yet left home. Anyway, after his photo session I took him back down and placed him on the side of a tree. The last I saw of him was his rapid progress up the trunk of the tree. I hope he's fine still out there somewhere...
Treatment: Crop, contrast +10, saturation +10, brightness +5, USM and resize.

Great shot and story to Bente - Thanks for sharing. I only see hes kind at night or in the dim. Nice to watch this kind of details of this little chap.

Nice Bente, up to your rescue tricks again. Bats are very beneficial to us. I like this picture. As I stated somewhere else, brown and dark subjects are difficult to "come alive" on a photograph, because the colours are dull and it will never rival the red, yellow or blue as seen in birds or d'fies. hence, Some tend to glance over these beautiful creatures. I think your exposure here is VERY good, and it even has an experession. S, from him, to you, via me, thanks for the warmth!

You were very lucky with this and what I find amazing with bats, is how soft their fur is. I could not resist a workshop on this (now that I know how to do it) I used edge finder to outline the bat and then I added a bit of brightness (+7) and contrast (+4) to the bat. - I hope you like it.

Wow Bente, what an excellent job you have done here. I am also a lover of bats and unfortunately I have not been lucky enough to obtain a capture of this magnitude!

Very interesting subject, Bente, that you've nailed very well despite it's color and the strong contrast with your hand. I found a common one here two weeks ago, falling on the yard from the back of a shutter. It was asleep, I guess (daytime). I didn't had the time to fetch the camera, it flew away within the first minutes. As a defence reflex, while it was on the ground, it was showing it's tiny sharp teeth. Quite impressive. Thanks for sharing your experience and this instructive shot.
