Allium schoenoprasum

A perennial herb that grows along the river bank in Cochrane. Flowers are rose-pink to purplish and sometimes white. Wild Chives are found in moist to wet areas. Thousands of Wild Chives grow along the Bow River. Sometimes when the river is high...as it is right now, only the tops of the chives are visible. Last year during our flood the Chives where totally submerged.

This variety of Wild Chives is edible and can be used for flavoring salads or used when cooking. But you must not get the Death Camas confused with the chives or wild onions. The stock is very similar and great care must be taken to prevent poisoning.

The crushed bulb of the chive was used to treat insect bites. Natives used Chives as a antiseptic and used for dressing on wounds and sores.

What a beautiful flower. Very vibrant colors. Nice detail in this shot. The soft OOF backround looks great.

I concur with others and would add that the depth of focus really adds to the overall effect.
Best wishes

Hi Janice, nice shot. This flower is a beautiful colour. You have shown it well with good exposure and detail. Also like the light background as it gives the flower a lift. Well done and TFS.

Nicely done, Janice. The 1/4 light looks wonderful here. Good shot. When I learned to identify this and wild onions while backpacking I starting adding chives to every meal. Mostly I did it for the spice, but I suppose I added some vitamin C or something that way. I guess I never got any of that death camas. But maybe you could provide a public service and shoot that next!
P.S. The weather is looking great for your canoing trip this weekend. (I get to go to soccer games, a picnic and a birthday party!)

Beautiful photo set on a perfect blurred background. The note is also very instructive. TFS.

Hi Janice, I do like your wild chive here. Good portrait of it especially with the riverbank in the BG. Nice and sharp, and a good colour too. Well done
