[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is one of several species of Tree Weta found in New Zealand.
Although fearsome looking, Hemideina species are generally docile, but can inflict a painful bite if handled roughly.
They are usually nocturnal, hiding in rotten trees during the daytime, and feed mainly on fresh leaves, but will sometimes also eat small insects.
All tree Wetas have five to seven pairs of large spines on their back legs and a hard sheild like plate behind their head.
They can live up to eight years, and some species of Weta can even freeze solid during winter,to thaw out and live on afterwards.

This is an excellent capture of the Weta, Steve, you show him off really well. He looks darker than the ones we find up here, and his shiny body and legs look great. Good find, thank you
Janice

Hi Steve!

I remember these creatures from others shots. Most fearfull insects from NZ :-) Very well taken, for sure not beautifull, but still very interesting. Good catch my friend!

Bonjour Steve,
Très belle macro de ce que l'on appellerait ici un grillon.
Belle composition.
Merci du partage

Hello Steeve,

What a superb close-up you are offering us today! It is the fist time I see such an insect! He looks like a fighter with armor! You got a great pov and make a wonderful composition! I like the blurry green bg that enhance the insect! Colors looks very natural also and details are so sharp! Interesting note! Great great job, Steeve and TFS,

Michel

Hello Steve, good shot. It is a fearsome looking insect. You photo is composed well and there are some good details there so the focus was spot on. I would personally like to see it a little bit brighter. Apart from the small nit it's fine. Well done.

Hi Steve, This is an excellent close up of the weta. As kids we were a bit terrified of these which lived in a hedge, so it is burned into the memory. Excellent clarity as in all your images. Very good description. Murray.

Wow... hermosa captura Steve... es grato volver a ver tus trabajos después de tanto tiempo.
Una gran agudeza, que a falta de luz, permite ver los detalles del insecto en todo su esplendor.
TFS.
Saludos... Ricardo

Wow... beautiful capture Steve... is pleasurable to return to see your works after as much time.
A great sharpness, that in the absence of light, allows to see the details of the insect in all its splendor.
TFS.
Regards... Ricardo
