I've spent the day at the Pilanesberg National Park and this is the first of the pictures that I took today. It was taken at a small dam on the Tau Road in the reserve. Today was a cloudy day and this picture was taken quite late. The light was poor and for this reason I had to shoot at a very low speed (1/13 sec.).

The Zebra (Equus Burchelli) belongs to the horse family. Its distinguishing marks are its unique black stripes, akin to the fingerprints on humans.

One of nature's great mysteries is why the Zebra has stripes. One theory is that the stripes help the zebra cool down. On hot days the black stripes get a lot hotter than the white area of the zebra and under the black stripes there are special layers of fat for protection. Hot air then rises off the black stripes forcing colder air down around the white areas thus cooling the zebra down. This, however is just a theory.

The stripes are also used as camouflage to confuse predators when zebras huddle in great numbers or mingle with herds of antelopes. The Zebra enjoys grazing the plains & savannahs during the day and sleeping during the night roaming in groups with one or two members acting as lookouts during the night.

Hello Anton,
Great capture! I love the composition with the two thirsty zebras and its reflexion.
Nice colours and light.
Thanks for sharing
Hernán

Lovely light despite the quality you say and the colours and details wow but I love the composition best.

Anton,

Excellently composed pic. The reflections are not cut off at all. I like the stilness of the water that assists in the clarity of the reflections. The Detail is good as well as the POV. TFS,
Sheriff

PS - Thanks for the email on Rietvlei. We may bump into each other there some day soon when I get a chance to go!

Hi Anton, nice shot with a great reflection!
Pity for the rock in the water over the reflection, but that's wildlife photographie not studio's photo.

Well done.

(How is your 200/400? It seems to work fine! But I heard it's heavy, does it?)

Hi Anton,
How strange that you only got eight points on this beautiful photo. The colors and the refelction are superb. It could have been a tad sharper, but considering the low light, you did outstanding.
TFS,
Niek

Hi ANotn,
Great capture. The sharpness for the shutter speed used is impressive. I'm not sure why this image does not have more points. TN is a funny place sometimes.
