Common blue butterfly.

A lot of info is already included TN about most common species. When I look for info on my subjects on the net I learn a lot too, and sometimes you come across technical info that helps to understand more this little beauties. I liked this one:

We report on the first case in which sequestered secondary plant compounds determine an insect’s external appearance in the ultraviolet spectrum and thereby influence visually mediated mate choice. Larvae of the common blue butterfly Polyommatus icarus specifically sequester flavonoids in different amounts and types, depending on the part or species of food plant. During late pupal development the majority of ultraviolet-absorbing flavonoids are deposited in the wing scales. The flavonoid content of the larval diet thereby determines ultraviolet wing patterns. In laboratory and field experiments, male butterflies clearly preferred flavonoid-rich, ultraviolet-absorbing female dummies. This preference is mediated visually by the ultraviolet pattern of the wings. Food-plant parts and species vary in value as a food source, so ultraviolet wing patterns may signal mate quality and are not a species-specific characteristic.

I found this COMPLETE EXPERIMENT very interesting.

Hope you like too!

Hi Felipe!
Crystal clear and sharp, perfect colours and POV. As you wrote - very popular subject on TN, well described. I like small, blue spot on wing of left butterfly.

Hallo Felipe and Cristina,
this is an outstanding macro of this couple. I am not only fascianted by the butterflies but also the structures and natural colours of the plant.
Considering the details, you can see even the male's clasper (or valva) in red-brown colour, chitinous structures to grasp the female.
The species you show is not the common blue (icarus), but probably Plebeius argus (not quite sure, because there are other species with similar underside patterns).

Buenas, un momento muy bien capatado esta cópula de icaros. Muy buena definición y colorido. Enhorabuena y un saludo.

Hi Felipe,
Excellent light and color, sharp details..
Very well seen against this great BG as well.
And thanx for the excellent notes on how flavonoid content of the larval diet determines ultraviolet wing patterns... Interesting stuff :)
Very well done.

Such pretty litttle b'flies these are. And seeing the male and female like this is so helpful for us to differentiate the sexes. Thanks Felipe,

Hello Felipe & Cristina,
An excellent capture of this couple.
I've not seen one of these butterflies yet, only on TN.
The diffused flash has given an excellent result.
Superb detail and colours,a nice dark BG and even the grass looks good.
Great work,well done.
