[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This morning I experienced sunrise at the Rietvlei Nature Reserve, South Africa. It was quite cold and being middle of winter, there was not a huge variety of bird species. I came across a pair of Blacksmith Plovers next to the road and decided to take a few photographs.

The Blacksmith is an assertive, conspicuous but wary creature. When the Blacksmith Plover is disturbed it makes a very loud metallic sounding "clink, clink" that resembles the sound of someone hammering a piece of metal. These Plovers are usually found alone or in pairs on muddy shores and in short grass near water, but will occasionally congregate with other plovers and fly in a flock. They're very common at the Rietvlei Nature Reserve and can frequently be seen wandering around next to the road.

The Blacksmith Plover is a monogamous territorial bird. They spend most of their time during the day at lakes and marshes with muddy banks where it feeds on insects, worms, snails, seeds, small mollusks, and crustaceans. There have been scattered reports of the Blacksmith Plover feeding near and in the mouths of crocodiles. The Blacksmith Plover plucks parasites from the backs of the reptiles as they bask in the sun. The Blacksmith will even enter the mouth of the crocodile to pick remnants of food from between the teeth or leeches from the lining of the mouth.

Hi Anton,

Very nice composition, with excellent exposure and POV,one small minor imo that the crop is a bit tight above, but that happens me as well sometimes when the object is closer than expected,I like the pictre,

Well done and TFS,

Paul

Hi Anton,
Beautiful bird well framed!
Well done on choice of DOF, superb textures in the feather coat!
You catch him in a good pose, and your image is well composed!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Anton,
An excellent shot on this Blacksmith Plover. Very difficult to keep color and detail in both the black and the white plumage. You did it very well. Nice quality light, and the detail is very sharp. Very informative notes too.

Very sharp capture of this beautiful and unusual plover, Anton.
Handsome markings and colors in a good POV.
TFS. : )

Hi Anton, nice shot of this plover.
Great light on the eye and good note.

Andrea

Anton,

I was also up early and drove past the Rietvlei Nature Reserve to go to the airport so I can vouch for it being cold. A pity that I could not enter the Reserve but I will do so on another day soon.

The Composition, DOF, Lighting, BG, Detail and sharpness are good. The black and white bit are never easy to expose correctly on these guys, so you did quite well. TFS,
Sheriff
