Anteating Chat

[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
This Anteating Chat was photographed in the Rietvlei Nature Reserve. It is a smallish; round-bodied and long-legged; sooty blackish brown bird which is a common resident in the South African Highveld and semi-arid western parts of South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana, south west Zimbabwe and Namibia. It can be found in open grassveld, rolling grassy hills, Kalahari sandveld, shrubby semidesert; usually with termite mounds, dongas and Ant bear burrows. It lives solitary, in pairs or in small groups of 6 or more birds. Perches on termite mound, bush, fence or telephone wire, especially along country roads; flies with blur of white wings, hovering, swerving and dropping to ground or perch; often raises tail after landing; rarely flicks wings. It forages on insects (including ants, termites, beetles, bugs and caterpillars, millipedes and fruit; ants taken mostly in winter. I once observed one eating a small snake. |

Beautiful bird, beautiful background and very good pose, it is pity that the picture is not sharp enough...
Hi Anton
A nice capture of this little chat. It gave you a great pose and I like the grass haulm to its side almost framing the bird.
The composition is good and the colours are very natural. I have to agree with Elroyie as far as the focus is concerned as it is slightly soft on the details. Possibly this was due to camera movement as the shutter speed at extended focal length could become sensitive. Maybe you could have closed the aperture somewhat as it is a small bird and the DOF would have still been forgiving at any extended distance. The BG is magnificent and the exposure was well handled.
Anyway, it still is a good photo and TFS.

What a beautiful portrait of this chat, Anton.
To me, it looks like a painting.
I really like the pastel peach colors in the nicely blurred BG,
as well as the wide range of browns on the bird's plumage.
Great POV and composition. TFS. : )
