Mandarin Duck
Aix galericulata

For you Greg!!

I think the female Mandarin duck is so attractive with her awesome eyes, even more attractive than her colourful husband.

The male Mandarin duck has the most detailed and ornate plumage of the ducks. He has distinctive long orange feathers on the side of the face, orange 'sails' on the back, and pale orange flanks. He has a chestnut and green crest, a wide white stripe along the eye, a bright chestnut coloured side and a red bill. The male's breast is plum coloured, its belly is white, its back is dark and its sides are mottled buff. He is considered by many to be the most beautifully coloured of all waterfowl.

Mrs Mandarin is dull by comparison with a grey head and a curving white stripe behind the eye, brown back and a series of white blotches on the underparts. But I think she is so beautiful especially with her pretty dark eyes and colour patterns around her head.

For most of the summer, the male Mandarin ducks do not have their distinctive plumage and look very much like the females. Following the breeding season, the males moult all of their colourful feathers, which do not re-grow until sometime in the fall. Mandarin ducks are one of the "perching" ducks. They have sharp talons and spend much of their time in trees.

Hi Janice!
Great hand-book 'How to compress a duck' :-))) I see you achieved great results on this field :-) Pose is very acrobatic, I like brown tones and greeeeen grass. Maybe we'll go to zoo soon to capture something similiar. Force will be needed to achieve similiar pose of model :-)

Hello Janice,
wonderful shot of this grooming duck. I think your duck studied yooga ;-). Very nice POV and excellent details. Sharpness, colors and framing are excellent.

Hi Janice

Have been out of range for internet connection over the last few days. Been in a remote area of New Zealand called The Catlins, so now it is time for me to catch up on what has been happening.

Excellent shot. Well done on everything here. Thanks. -)

Hello Janice, very good timing with this shot of Mandarin duck, colors and sharpness are good, POV too. Very well done, Didier.

Hello Janice,
Nice shot! You've captured it doing something interesting and that's great. I like the low angle too. The upper part is a little distracting, wish it was green. But that's nothing very serious.

Hello Janice,

Yep! It is a very nice picture of that duck took with an unusual pose :-) You managed very well the exposure and the details are great (we can see easily all the little feathers). Your pov forced you to get this line in the upper part of the bg but you got no choice if you want to be at the duck level. Good post and TFS,

Merveilleuse photo, Janice. Les détails du plumage sont impressionnants. Très belle réussite dans l'ensemble, techniquement et pour la composition.
