Nice picture to start with, Phil!
The critter is a blowfly, Lucilia sp. (Calliphoridae). There's a link to the discussion on bubble blowing in flies, maybe you'd like to learn more about this phenomenon: http://www.diptera.info/forum/viewthread.php?forum_id=16&thread_id=1016

I would also suggest using smaller aperture/bigger f-stop number for better DOF.
