Natrix natrix - Grass Snake

Class: Reptilia
Order: Squamata
Suborder: Ophidia (Serpentes)
Family: "Colubridae" - Natricidae
Genus: Natrix
Speceis: N. natrix

The grass snake (Natrix natrix) is by far the most wide spread and the most common snake species in Europe. It is spread almost trhought the whole European continent, North-Africa and the near east.

It has numerous subspecies of which 2 occur in Romania: Natrix natrix natrix (everywhere) and Natrix natrix persa (in Dobrogea -Tulcea and Constanta counties).

It can reach a lenght of over 100cm, Natrix natrix helvetica reaching close to 2m. The bigest one I caught was 1.2m Most subspecies can easily be recognised by the 2 yelow spots behind the head.

The species can be found almost anywhere in Europe near a water source, its favorite food consisting of amphibians and fish.

Mating takes place in spring (april-may) and 11-52 eggs are layd in june-july. The babies emerge in august or september.

Like I mentioned in a a previous post, these snakes are completely harmless, its only defense mechanism consisting of nasty-smelling secretions, eliminated from the anal glands.

I hope you enjoy the photo... I caught this gall this may, near the vilage of Fetesti (Suceava County, Romania) and she was at least 100cm long.

Striking image, Alex. : )
Fantastic details on the head and excellent management of DOF. Perfect exposure and beautiful light and colors. The two white V shapes above the eyes really accentuate the shape of the head. Your tight crop is very effective.
Great work, and TFS. : )

Luis52

Very nice close-up of this beautiful snake, Alex!

I find Natrix natrix to be very fitting for a head close-up due to the lovely model and colors it presents.
Great sharp details, nice colors and excellent spot on focus.

very well done.

Hello Alex!
Great shot you got here. Perfect spot on focus renders sharply the eye, and at the same time blurred tongue shows the motion. Excellent exposure and composition. I'm afraid of snakes whether harmless or not and no way I'd decide to get so close to one. Congratulations,

Hi Alex, he does look a little annoyed, certainly got a very defensive stance, luckily it's all bluster and pomp! Well done on this post you've captured some very interesting behaviour. Well done!

Hi Alex,
Just time for a very quick visit. Very busy day.
Nice shot. Thanks for posting.
Have a great weekend.

Hi Alex,
When I saw this photo the first time, I had no points left so I said to myself that I would be back and then I forgot :( Here I am today :) Very good catch of this beautiful snake (I love them). I like the way you capture the moment with its tongue sticking out! Great timing, details and POV. Well done! Regards,

Very nice grasssnake photo. You focused in on the intersting part of the snake and captured it well. I love the blurred tongue flick.

Hello Alex,
Excellent snake photograph!
A great portrait of your friend here, DOF works very well and I may see the photographers reflection in the snake's eye...
Interesting framing and good natural colours!
