here's another photo of the rock hyrax sunning himself near our tent in Serengetti. I was also told that this little creature is closely related to the elephant although I am not sure if there's any scientific fact to back up the claim, common sense says no!

Cute picture of your hyrax!

This the closest living relative to the elephant, according to several reputable text books. It seems hard to believe when you look at the size and physical characteristics when comparing the two, but it's true. :)

Not exactly closely related. Elephants do not have close relatives. But what they meant was the closest relative. It is actually now debated that some marine mammals as dugongs might be closer relatives to elephants than Hyraxes. They also not look the same at all.
There were numerous relatives to elephants and hyraxes. All extinct.

I'm used to see hyraxes with a round shape. Nice to see a "flat" one.
