From the Alpine forests -

Rheumaptera hastata (Linnaeus, 1758)

Argent & Sable
Speerspitzenspanner
Speerpuntspanner
Paśnik oszczepiak
Piadivka oštepovitá
Píďalka březová
Keihäsmittari

Family: Geometridae / Larentiinae

Wingspan: 28 - 35 mm

When you enter an alpine coniferous forest in the summer months, there is a typical smell of fresh herbs and fungi in the air, and even on a rainy day there will be a number of small Lepidoptera busily flying around – day active members of the family of “Geometridae”. Most of them have subdued colours, but some of them have rather distinctive markings – like the one shown, that does look quite conspicuous with its striking black and white pattern. When sitting down, these moths resemble some bird’s droppings. This might be the kind of camouflage they seem to be intending.

As if they would not really believe in their kind of camouflage, they prefer to escape deep into vegetation when disturbed. This is where I finally succeeded to chase this one down, after many attempts to get a reasonably close and sharp picture of that moth that can be met in large numbers in the forests of the mountain valleys in the Tyrol.

The species is distributed over the holarctic region, that means it can be found in the mountain forests of Europe, temperate Asia, and North America.

“A distinctive species, occupying damp moorland and hillsides. The moth is one of the few day-flying species. It has a widely scattered distribution, although local, throughout Britain, and is commoner on the Scottish moors. The single generation flies in June and July. The larvae spin together the leaves of the foodplants, bog myrtle (Myrica gale) and birch (Betula spp.), forming a cocoon.” http://ukmoths.org.uk/show.php?bf=1787

In the Alpine forests, caterpillars feed on Vaccinium uliginosum L., Vaccinium myrtillus L., rather than Betula.

The location:

A coniferous mountain forest at an elevation of 1900 meters above sea level near the village of Gries im Sulztal, Oetztal valley, Tyrol.

Difícil captura Peter... siempre el color blanco es un problema para estas imágenes.
En este caso, la iluminación adecuada, un correcto POV y atinado DOF permite ver al insecto en todo su esplendor.
Bien hecho... una vez más.
Saludos cordiales... Ricardo

Difficult capture Peter... the white color is always a problem for these images.
In this case, the appropriate illumination, a correct POV and hit upon DOF allows to see the insect in all its splendor.
Well done... once again.
Cordial greetings... Ricardo

Oh Waw! Never seen this one. Very sharp and clear, with excellent contrast. The grass on the right is one of those frustrating little details that go hand in hand with real field photography ;°)
Thanks for posting

Hi Peter!
Another beautifull, small moth. I like black and white colours and patterns on its wings. Good composition with green BG. Excellent DOF/details.

Heinz
