[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is the first post from my new 50 – 500 Sigma lens. This lens is heavy, but it feels like we are made for each other. I was “burning with desire” to try it out and stopped at the Hartebeespoort dam on my home after work. I found this Three-banded Plover next to a low-water bridge and here is the result.

More about the Three-banded Plover (Roberts: 249)
It is a striking, small plover with two black breast bands. Size: 18cm - smaller than a dove. Afr. Driebandstrandkiewiet.

This compact plover has the top of the head dark brown, with a broad white band running from the forehead to the nape - creating a distinctive, capped effect. The chin, throat, cheeks and neck are bluish-grey. The upperparts are brownish-grey. There are two neat black breast bands separated by a white band on the upper breast. The rest of the underparts are white. The bill is red with a lack tip, and the yellow-brown eye is surrounded by a striking red eye-ring. The legs and feet are pinkish-grey.

Three-banded Plovers can be found near any inland- or coastal water body but have a preference for those with open, muddy shorelines or patches of bare ground. They usually avoid marshy areas with abundant vegetation. This species is usually seen singly, or in small groups, but larger flocks occasionally occur.

The voice is a high-pitched piping pi-peep or peep

The diet consists of insects, spiders, molluscs, crustaceans and worms.

Three-banded plovers can breed at any time of the year - depending on suitable conditions. Nests are a scrape in the ground, usually in a gravely area or on an exposed mudflat. The nest is usually ringed with small stones, bits of soil or dry plant material which help to hide the eggs.

Congratulations for your new lens, Japie. As far as I see, you are not going to bring it back to the shop! Beautiful bird, very good light and environment. I'm amazed by the details and the homogene image quality. I don't think you could have a better one of this bird. It's perfect.

May be you have to buy it now, Japie. To try it it is to adopt it, as they say. ;-)
And if you are made for each other, I hope that your wife is not too jealous. I hope that you will not have to choose between her and the lens. ;-)
Because me, I am jealous. I envy your new relation. ;-)
Seriously, I think you will make great things together and I wish good luck to you in your new life together, for the best and for the worst...
And excellent post: picture and note.

So beautiful........ the bird is clear, alert, the water magic!

I could not stand votindg also this one :D
Besides the quality is has a lot of art into it. TFS.

Looks to me lik eyou have found an ideal marriage between the camera and lens. This image is excellent. I have spent many hours over the years watching and photographing shorebirds, so I know how difficult it is to get this close.
This is an excellent image with exceptional deatail. The shoot could easily be used in any photographic guide on shorebirds to illustrate this species. Very well done 10/10.
