|[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note|
|This is the Hawaiian Monk Seal(Monachus schauinslandi). This rare seal has been on the endangered species list since 1976. There are about 1400 individuals living on the uninhabited Northern Hawaiian Islands. Only occasionally do they visit the populated islands, usually Ni'ihau and Kaua'i. Recent population declines have been attributed to sharks, fishing net entanglement, ciguatera poisoning, and human disturbances.|
