Pyrrhosoma nymphula

Widespread and common. Adult flight period extends from late April to August. Pyrrhosoma nymphula is the earliest Odonata species on the wing, appearing in warm Springs in late April. It is found in most habitats except for the most exposed sites. It has a preference for small acidic pools and is able to persist on many very dry sites that have become unsuitable for other Odonata. It is also quick to colonise newly created ponds.

KEY IDENTIFICATION FEATURES

A large and robust red damselfly with extensive dark markings
Black markings on upper surface of abdomen towards the apex
Some females are almost entirely black on the upper surface of the abdomen (form melanotum)

Hola Felipe,

Hi Felipe!

Surprising POV :-) I love composition. Red damsel, sharp stalk of grass and blurred leaves of fern on BG. Superb. I'm not 100% sure about frame :-)

Great POV - it looks quite scary like this. It is almost like something out of a horror movie. Perfect sharpness and colours as well.

Hi you two,
this damsel looks very agressive - perhaps the red colour - and this POV - it's wonderful.
Excellent sharpness and good contrast, I like it, thanks

Hi Felipe and Cristina...

Honestly speaking I rarely even never have seen this kind of dragonfly, very beautiful coloration it has. And what amazed me is the angle you took...it is a challenge for me to take a sharp, detail and good DOF created photograph with this angle. I normally took a plain angle. Bravo for this lovely image...!
TFS...

Musin
