Caligo memnon

Common Name: Tawny Owl Butterfly, Memnon's Owl

Range: Central America toVenezuela
Ours arrive from: El Salvador and Costa Rica

Food: bananas {Musa spp.), Heliconia spp. and gingers

Notes: Eye spots on the underside of these butterflies are large, resembling owl eyes. A predator would think twice before attacking something with such apparently large eyes, on the chance that there may be an equally large body on the other side of them. Many owl butterflies in the wild are found with a piece of the hind wing missing, in the shape of a bird beak. In this instance, the predator (bird) was not scared off by the eye spots, but was fooled into attacking there instead of on its vital body. All species are crespuscular in behavior and can be found feeding on rotting bananas and other fruits. Their caterpillars eat the leaves of banana and other large-leafed plants.

can't say much more than very nicely done and TFS

Hello Pam!
What a beautiful subject you found! Amazing patterns and beautiful brown patterns on the wing. Framing and pov superb, and the perch looks great too! Vertical position is impressive here, with the bg this composition really wonderful!
Thank you,

Hello Pam, nice shot with great details and colors.
A lovely atmosphere!

Another very good picture.
You should give a course in framing too:-). Or a workshop...
Your note is always very well too. But I always look if you have used flash or not and I can't find it. I had that question in mind with some previous pictures from you too.
Good capture!!

Hi Pam,

One of the best Owl Butterfly shots I've seen in a long while and much better than any I've managed to take. Lovely and sharp , showing great detail in their amazingly marked wings. I like you're PoV, DoF is spot on as is the exposure.

Hi Pam,

This is an unusual POV but I like it. The colors in this capture are splendid. The background colors are just one with the butterfly.
Great work!
