Back to the birds of prey centre and this time the focus is on the Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus)a species native to the UK. The European population crashed in the fifties because of widespread pesticide use but fortunately, numbers are once again improving in many areas. The bird's length is 37-50cm (the female being larger than the male) with the males having a wingspan of 87-100cm and the females 110-114cm.
For prey, they specialise in catching medium sized birds in the air and when hunting soar for long periods, often very high up. The execute a long steep glide when prey is spotted and either knock out their victim when passing or grab the prey from below and behind while levelling off. Peregrines also hunt from a perch taking up persuit after flying birds. Choice of victim depends on local supply and can include pigeons, wildfowl, starlings, thrushes and corvids. They hunt over all habitats but prefer open spaces such as coasts, moors and fields.
They breed on steep cliffs and have been known to breed on the ground on wet bogs.
They are largely silent away from breeding sites their main call being described as 'harsh cackling at medium pace, scolding and persistent rekh rekh rekh' (your guess is as good as mine!)

Picture is cropped and sized with USM 15%. The depth of field has nicely blurred the grass behind the bird to an even backdrop (pure fluke).

Jax, This is a beautiful portrait shot of a beautiful bird. Sharpness DOF and detail are very nice. You have a little overexposure at the bird's chest. If you shoot in RAW and postprocess, this kind of overexposure is usually correctable.
Great shot!
Greetings,Jan

Absolutely stunning...the Peregrine is my MOST favorite of all the raptors/falcons... They are the handsomest of them all and your portrait definitely shows he is has got to be one of the sexiest in the bird world...sort of like the James Bond of the bird world!

la netteté de cette image est sa force a mon avis, très beau portrait bravo

Perfect capture Jax. Lots of details in the plumage - even with the slightly burn in the white. Very nice colours and great sharpness. I love his attitude.

Did you know that this is the fastest creature on earth. In a dive for prey it can reach a speed over 300 km per hour. This beautiful bird has - hopefully - returned to Denmark as we had one pair breeding in 2002 for the first time since 1970.

Is he beautiful or is he beautiful? This is one super raptor mugshot of a super raptor, Jax!!! I love the head and BG. As a small nit, a bit more space above the head and a bit less below his shoulder, with some space to the right, and he will really pop, but that is just my personal gut feel on the compo. And there are all my dimes spend. Sorry.

Jax
Beautiful shot. It is sharp as a razor, and the colors are very good. Congratulations on a great picture.

Salut Jax
