European garden spider

The European garden spider (Araneus diadematus, cross spider) is a very common and well-known orb-weaver spider in Western Europe. Araneus diadematus also lives in parts of North America, in a range extending from New England and the Southeast to the Northwestern United States and adjacent parts of Canada.

Individual spiders' colouring can range from extremely light yellow to very dark gray, but all european garden spiders have mottled markings across the back with five or more large white dots forming a cross. The white dots result from cells that are filled with guanine, which is a byproduct of protein metabolism.[1]

It is hard to provoke a garden spider to bite - if it does, the bite is slightly unpleasant and utterly harmless (unless you're a fly!)

Hallo Heinz,

Hi Heinz!
The details on this spider are vivid and colourful. Shows your dexterity in capturing macros of small insects such as this spider. As for me, I always end up making a mess unless the spider is pretty big. (I shot one big one in India this summer which I will post shortly.)
The dark BG adds in highlighting the details and textures in this picture.
TFS and take care.

Hi Heinz

Very nice picture os this garden spider descending on one of his ropes. Great POV!
Also nice are the details, light and contrast with the BG. Very well done. Perhaps the only nit is the tiny noise in the BG...not a big deal though :)

Bravo and TFS

ist denn heute "kreuzspinnentag"? *g*

Gruss..Sky

Hello Heinz, Another great photo from you, Perfect detais, excellent colors, bg, POV DOF perfect details, excellent shot,

bonjour heinz
