This summer I heard some unfamiliar screeches while at the lake. As it turned out, the noise came from a pair of hungry coot chicks demanding to be fed. I was very excited because I have never seen any coots nesting at our lake before. These chicks were more like juveniles, and they had already lost their orangy look, although you can still see some orange on their heads. I followed the whole family of two parents and two chicks, as the parents repeatedly dove underwater and brought up tidbits to feed one chick or the other. They were very attentive parents. : )

American Coot
Fulica americana

Foulque d'Amérique (French)
Gallareta americana (Spanish)

Often mistaken for a duck, the American Coot is a common waterbird. Its all black body and white chicken-like beak distinguish this swimming rail from the real ducks.

Description:
All black.
Swims and dives.
White bill with black mark near tip.
Bill triangular like a chicken's, not flat like a duck's.
White stripe on sides of undertail.

Sex Differences:
Sexes alike.

Sound:
Calls scratchy clucking noises and series of "kuk-kuk-kuk" notes.

Cool Facts:
Although it swims like a duck, the American Coot does not have webbed feet like a duck. Instead of having all the toes connected by webs, each coot toe has lobes on the sides of each segment.

Manyee ,

You must go out with your camera every day. There are Coot's at the lake near my house, they are darn hard to capture.

Well done.

Scott

The archetypal image of feeding and nurturing aspect of the Mother Nature.
Very attractive capture, Manyee. The parent coot looks happy to be feeding the little chick.
Wonderful POV, details and colors.
TFS.
