Did I mentioned that best thunderstorms are in Gulf of Kotor? Yes, I did :-) This picture shows another one. It was early evening, so clouds were still visible with last rays of sunlight on them. I was sitting on hotel balcony and catching lightnings. It was really great time for someone who loves thunderstorms ;-)

A bolt of lightning can reach temperatures approaching 28,000 degrees Celsius (50,000 degrees Fahrenheit) in a split second. This is about five times hotter than the surface of the sun. The heat of lightning that strikes loose soil or sandy regions of the ground may fuse the soil or sand into glass channels called fulgurites. These are sometimes found under the sandy surfaces of beaches and golf courses, or in desert regions. Fulgurites are evidence that lightning spreads out into branching channels when it strikes the ground.

Trees are frequent conductors of lightning to the ground. Since sap is a poor conductor, its electrical resistance causes it to be heated explosively into steam, which blows off the bark outside the lightning's path. In following seasons trees overgrow the damaged area and may cover it completely, leaving only a vertical scar. If the damage is severe, the tree may not be able to recover, and decay sets in, eventually killing the tree. Occasionally, a tree may explode completely. It is commonly thought that a tree standing alone is more frequently struck, though in some forested areas, lightning scars can be seen on almost every tree.

Of all common trees the most frequently struck is the oak. It has a deep central root that goes beneath the tree, as well as hollow water-filled cells that run up and down the wood of the oak's trunk. These two qualities make oak trees better grounded and more conductive than trees with shallow roots and closed cells.

great framing of the lighting over the hills,
what a great moment and timing to capture all in one shot, the sea, the hills and the well positioned cruise liner... and not to forget the downpour that can also be observed :D

Wonderfull

Stunning capture of the electric storm, though for me cropping off the ferry and most of the town lights makes even more dramatic IMO. A few words add to the notes about how you set up to capture this moment would of intrest to the rest of us. TFS yours Robert

I guess that if you lived in the States you would be one of those Tornado Watchers!!
Many of our large old Kauri trees were killed through lightning strikes.
It looks a beaut storm Greg! I can understand how excited you would have been seeing it like this. How well you did capturing it like this. Thanks for sharing

Wow...what a dramatic shot of this thunderstorm Grzegorz
I can just feel the electricity in the air. I really like how you can see the stream of rain or hail coming down from the clouds. Of course the lightening is pretty spectacular too. The colours are great and your image is nice and sharp.

Another impressive shot from this amazing moment, my friend!
You know, ever since i've seen your first post about this storm, i hoped for such a big thundersstorm, so that i can try and capture a lightning like you...but, badluck...it hasn't rained much in Romania since them :(
Oh well, i'm not that upset - it gave me the opportunity to take shots of other things ;)
Anyway, this too is a magnificent picture, with great DOF, excelletn exposure (BTW - did you compensate ie anyhow?) and superb colors.

Hi Greg,
WOW! That is another great lightning shot! I think the composition is perfect as is. The ferry boat and other lights from the harbor add greatly to this shot for sense of scale. It would ruin the shot to crop them out even if it would not raise more noise. Perfect composition and framing in the portrait mode. The lightning does a beautiful job lighting the clouds and showing the texture.

Excellent shot Greg!! I really love these kind of lighteningbulbs pictures. I want to shoot one myself some day, but there are hardly any thunderstorms in NL. We do get a lot of rain, but almost no thunder. I love this picture, with the boat in the foreground. Well done & TFS!
