Southern Masked Weaver
Ploceus velatus

Also known as: Afrikaans: Swartkeelgeelvink, English: Masked-Weaver, Vitelline Masked Weaver, German: Maskenweber, French: Tisserin à tête rousse.

ploceus: Greek plok(, a web or anything woven (plokos means a braid or wreath).
velatus: Latin, covered or veiled (from velo, to cover or veil).

I feel about these birds as Gert does about his ducks. I now have three breeding males in my garden. This photo is of one of them checking up on one of his two “wives” to ensure all is well.

The breeding season runs from July to April (mainly September-February) throughout South Africa; often earlier in suburban areas than rural areas because of available building material. Nest building may continue into May. With up to eight successful broods per season for each polygamous male.

The nest is a neat rounded oval woven by male of strips of grass and reed leaves. It has a vertical entrance with or without a tube 8-12 mm long. Its lined by the female with grass inflorescences and leaves. The nest is usually attached to drooping branch of tree or between upright reed stems, over water when available; at almost any height above water or ground. Nests not accepted by female are destroyed by the male only. (It is commonly believed in SA that the female destroys the nests)

Sorry for the short note, but a lot has been posted on this birdie (I have posted it three times before) and I am running out of things to say. :)

Very good POV Gerhardt. She seems very happy in her newly built house so the male needed destroy and rebuild it. He is obviously an old campaigner. You say he has two wives, well all I can say is " some guys just don't learn now, do they."

VERY NICE, Gerhard, no nits, goos picture of these two, like the accacia flowers in the nest - is hierdie twee blomkinders uit die sestigs?

This is an awesome shot Gerhard. I love the way the nest hangs from from the tree.
The colours and detail are perfect.
Really spectacular shot.
Thanks for posting

Great shot Gerhard, they have a beautiful nest (it's even got flowers).
This is a lovely moment you have caught here.
Lovely capture, great note, well done.

Beautiful colours and great scene!
This is very nice nest. I think that my sparrows should take some lessons from this fellows cause they make their nests mostly from strings, scraps of fabric and any other quite strange and not very nice things ;-)

Love Story! This beautiful shot carries many meanings and could be used by advertising companies for a multitude of customers. A shot full of hope. The flowers also make the image. Poster quality! Very well catched, Gerhard.

Lovely shot Gerhard, how long did you have to 'hang around' to get this one? I like scene against the blue sky. Very nice work.

Great capture Gerhard! Great use of flash to fill the front of the nest & mother. Sharp & detailed..None of my branches to distract! ;-)
Like the title alot (the ball & chain thing) Ha, ha! Great blue sky, well done my friend!!

Beautiful photo, Gerhard. Great composition and use of the fill flash. Please tell me, with your IS lens, is it true that you can really do without a tripod most of the times? Great work, and thanks for sharing the result with us.

Great capture Gerhard. I love the composition and the picture is very clear - meaning plenty of details. I have seen these birds only on TV (I think by David Attenborrough) but very interesting. As I said - it is a lovely composition with the tweak and the nest. Large cute-factor and very pleasant to look at. Great not to follow.

Excellent! Een van die beste voel-foto's wat ek nog gesien het.
The point of view with all distractions avoided focuses beautifully on the subject. And she looks, o, so spoilt today!
I like!

Great and interesting photo! I really love a description ;-) It would be wonderful to be so loved like this "wife" in nest :-)
Good job!

Dis pragtig !!!! How far were you away from him ?? Look how pretty the nest is with the yellow flowers. She definitely wanted a colour-coded house ;)

What a beautiful nest. What wife wouldn't want such a home with flowers and green leaves decorating it like this. I love it. Great shot Gerhard - colours, compo, details, and 2 happy little birds. TFS.

Well, I'm late commenting, so it's all been said, really. I'll just add, then, that he seems to be a good provider, he even saw to it that missus has a flower garden right outside the front door ;-))
