|The Nobbi (Amphibolurus nobbi) is a small dragon of about 150mm total length. It is a reasonably common lizard with an odd distribution that stretches along coastal Queensland, coastal northern New South Wales (NSW), then right through the centre of NSW and into eastern South Australia and north-western Victoria. It inhabits dryer eucalypt forests and woodlands, often associated with rocky terrain, though through its western distribution it can be found in semi-arid mallee shrubland. Like most Australian dragons it is diurnal in nature and forages on a range of insects and other smaller lizards. This dragon excavates a burrow where they spend the night, but during the day they love to perch on rocky boulders or low branches, sunbaking and watching for prey. They breed in summer (October – January) when the males (illustrated)develop a reddish flush along the tail and females lay a clutch of 6-10 eggs which take 47-62 days to hatch. During winter April - September they are dormant in their burrows.|
We found this one at Nangar National Park near the town of Orange in central NSW. Nangar NP is a small, isolated but interesting park of around 9,000 hectares with an excellent camping area and a number of 4WD tracks. Dominated by various types of eucalypt forests, it is a haven for wildlife being surrounded by sea of agriculture. Its highest point is Mt. Nangar at 770m, which is around 300m higher than the surrounding plains.
