On our last day in New Zealand my girlfriend and I spent the day in Kaikoura. Kaikoura is famous for it's vast amount of marine wildlife. All kinds of Whales, Sealions, Seals, Dolphins, Orca's, Royal Albatross's & Sharks can be spotted. We were lucky enough to see a lot of the beforenamed animals and we got good shots of most of them.

On the photo you see the tail of a Spermwhale, diving to deep waters to feed. The ocean is extremely deep just off the coast of Kaikoura and therefore it's a safehaven for Whales. A century ago litteraly thousands and thousands of Whales could be found in this large area. Now only a few remain, those are the offspring of the Whales who survived the slaughterings.

I already posted a version of this tail on TE HERE. But I really do think the photo belongs here on TN (I posted the tail on TE before I discovered TN) and I also believe this version is better. I learnt a thing or two about composition here on TN. :) I especially like the fact you can now see the white watertrack which the Whale left behind. You also get a better 'he's going to dive feeling' imo. Do you agree this version is better?

I like the TE version because it is bigger and we see it more near, but I agree with you, I prefer to see all the full way it is doing and the foam of the sea. You catch the best moment to shot it, with the tail in curve an with the water falling.
Really very lucky to find those big animals swimming for you! Very good Photo Pieter..

Hi Pieter. Excellent capture of this spermwhale. Very sharp and clear. Well done.

Pieter, this picture is indeed very beautiful. The blue colors is very nice, and the action you captured is very nice.

Great composition and POV.

This is great...I love to whale watch in the summer months. Hopefully this summer I actually get a shot of a Humpback breeching.

Hi Pieter,
What a great shot:)that is one of my dream to see a whale in the ocean and picture it but so far i did have that luck in boston or in fl.Well Done.

Wow, great shot of a great creature. I love the movement that you captured! I like the composition of this shot a little better as it's more interesting. The waves and ripples behind him help to illustrate the movement, as well as his size. I hope to see one in person next month in NZ!
