Bee-eaters are some of the most colourful and beautiful aerial hunters in the avian kingdom, to me, at least. Their ability to pluck an insect out of the air is phenomenal, and they will generally return to their perch from whence they launched after the prey. This makes it fairly easy to shoot them IF they allow you to get close.

This is the Swallow-tailed Bee-eater - Merops hirundineus 19-22 cm. Hence this picture is larger than life. There is a picnic site at Diikbaardskolk at the junction of the Dune and Nossob roads. The birds are used to people around them all day, hence it is possible to approach quite near to certain birds in the right perching conditions.

This guy, and a couple of his cousins were in attendance, and they were feeding some chicks in a hole in the ground. All bee-eaters burrow a tunnel into suitable soil embankments, but these guys had tunnels in the nearly level sand on the edge of the open area. They were sitting in the Camelthorn tree - - Acacia erioloba above my head. I was standing below them shooting up into the tree, and this close-up was as near as I could get, with a little cropping below the chest. The hapless dictum is a honey bee – lending credibility to this bird’s name.

Excellent macro of the bee Callie. I would not even dare to say how good this is. Stunning work, now also in my fav's

Ek hou van die manier wat hy sy koppie draai.., asof hy wil dat jy sy beste kant sien. The blue on the neck is almost the same as the skie. The focus on his head and under his neck looks a bit soft, if i compare it to the chest feathers??

He is still a beauty.

Great perspective and stunning detail of plumage. The capture of the Bee is a definite bonus. Nice one.

Great portrait Callie.
I think this is our best friend, eating a lot of bees and wasp. Great colours, POV and composition.
It's little soft on the head, but still a very good shot.
Very well done.

Well done on this splendid capture Callie. It must have taken some patience. The colours here all seem to compliment each other.
I've missed a few of your posts lately I think so I'll have to go back and have a look. Cheers, Steve.

Up to the usual standard Callie, brilliant colours, great feather texture and lovely composition.
Well caught!

Nothing to say!

Callie, I dont feel like commenting this. I am just amazed for this shot ans the workshops. Congratulations. Favs.

Great catch, double meaning :), these are not so big birds, so I admire this portrait, this is a good one, very good colours and details, the 'bokeh' is like a paint.

You've done really well with this one Callie...it's excellent.

Ha Callie,

This realy look as if the bird was painted. I think you were feeding him all the time dead bees and he got fed up?
Very nice colorfull picture with sharp details.
(Fanny to read a word as Dijkbaardskolk.)

Thanks, Hendrik

Prachtige close-up van de bijeneter Callie, ook de kleuen zijn schitterend, de veren kunnen gewoon geteld worden, zo scherp is deze foto.

Excellent Callie. I love the angle of his head and his eye on teh bee. Well done.

What a moment! I tried with the white-eyes and termites yesterday after the rain but ISO 800 and F5.6 at 1/60 would not permit me such luck. Beautiful colors and the details of the bee is a show off. :) Great shot!

Wauw Callie,
Deze had ik dus net even gemist, Fantastische foto, schitterende kleuren pracht, the pof is very good, and the detail of the bee, very nice, Callie hartstikke goed.

I've been pretty preoccupied with other pursuits, which has to be the only excuse for missing a beauty like this. Great colours, sharpness, DOF and POV. I'm glad the unfortunate victim isn't a dragonfly this time ;-))
