The Common Evening Brown (Melanitis leda) is a common species of butterfly found flying at dusk. The flight of this species is erratic. They are found in South Asia and South-east Asia extending to parts of Australia.

The Common Evening Brown is known to feed on padi. The upperside is dark brown with a black subapical patch bearing two white spots and inwardly shaded with orange brown. The very variable underside is buff or grey, with fine dark brown striations. A submarginal row of yellow-ringed ocelli are usually found in the typical example. The variations in the undersides seem to be related to the wet and dry seasons in the region. The butterflies usually fly at dawn and shortly before dusk and are not normally seen during the day, except when disturbed.

Hello Pankaj,
an excellent picture of this Satyrine butterfly nicely showing the eye-spots and the complex line pattern. In contrast to many other butterfly species, the underside wing-pattern is much more attractive than that of the upperside.
Best wishes, Peter

Beau le papillon, discret mais n' a pas échappé a votre regard. Thomas

hi
la texture de ses ailes est assez etrange, mais c'est tres joli avec les autres motifs.la mise au point est un peu limite sur la tête.
