This Sparrowhawk comes to my garden 2 or 3 times a day hunting. She leaves empty handed on most occasions.
This day she missed her prey yet again and just sat on the roof of the bird table. It was pouring with rain and I think she was thoroughly cheesed off.
These birds only capture their prey by surprise so when they miss, the other birds constantly dive at them to send them on their way. It must be a very lonely life being a bird of prey.
As for the photograph it was the best I could do, taking into account the weather conditions and the fact it was taken through a double glazed patio window. |

Hi John,
Great capture! Love the head on look of the Sparrowhawk. Focus is soft, but you mentioned that it was through a double glazed window.
The crop is a little tight .. I would have preferred a little more space around the bird.

I miss some details but it doesn't matters when pose colors and composition are so good. Especially for a wild shy bird as a sparrowhawk.
I'm a little puzzled by your note. I've seen birds trying to hide in a tree and the hawk diving again and again in the tree to try to catch. I thought birds would attack only if the hawk is not dangerous (full belly) or would attack only other prey birds (less skilled to purchase and catch in the air)
